I had endocarditis in March 2008 and was operated emergently for a destroyed aortic heart valve. i was outfitted with a St Jude mechanical valve. 4 months later the 1st valve failed and I had a redo with a St Jude in July, 2008. I am going on my 6th year with no complications. I am back to pre-surgery fitness. Other then afib and lifetime warfarin medications, life has returned to normal.

It is with a grateful heart, that on January 17, 2015, I will have reached my first anniversary of post aortic valve replacement surgery. It has been a year of new beginnings, and most certainly, a time of continued education. I expect that this will be lifelong learning. My surgical scar has developed a keloid, which is a problem that I know not how to solve. I consider each day a gift from God.
