“Close To My Heart” Project Looking For Female Heart Surgery Patients

I just received this very unique request from Angelica Hoyos. Is anyone interested?

Here is what Angelica writes, “I am a photographer in Los Angeles and I am currently working on a project which consists of creating artistic portraits of women who have had heart surgery under the age of 40. The purpose of the project is to leave women feeling that the scar on their chest is nothing to be ashamed about. I am working in collaboration with the American Heart Association.”

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this artistic concept! I’m curious if these portraits are in the form of photography or paintings? I’m also curious why the criteria only includes women under 40? That being said, I just got deleted from the prospective candidates.
This can be such a powerful presentation throughout the country. Once completed, perhaps it could “travel”. The possibilities are endless,….art galleries, museums, maybe even Oprah!

I found this request to be very interesting. I am a female aged 65 who has an aortic valve replacement 8 months ago. My husband thinks I am still a very sexy lady, but the scar and its state of healing really bothers me. Don’t you think it would be nice to include women who are older. Some of us are very concerned about our appearence. Great concept that would help a lot of women adjust.

This is an awesome idea! I just had surgery for an aortic aneurysm on February 25, 2009. Just like you Adam, I was very fortunate to have the surgery done by Dr. Starnes. I was also lucky to find out about your book. It’s helped me and my family out tremendously, so thanks so much for writing it. After having gone through all this, I’ve been feeling like I need to do something to promote heart health. I’ve been an elementary school teacher for 17 years and I’ve volunteered for American Heart Association at my school for the past 3 years. I feel like I need to do more, and “Close to My Heart” Project sounds like a great opportunity!!!

Hi all! I’ve been asked the age question so many times that I think we should definitely expand the age bracket. Our initial thinking was that: when people think of heart disease and surgery no body ever thinks that teenager or a 30 something year old can be a heart disease victim. Carol Lang: The portraits are stylized photographs. I will put up our first photoshoot in our blog, so everyone can see it.
