Can A Patient Be Awake During Heart Surgery? Bypass? Valve Surgery?
By Adam Pick on November 5, 2007
This was news to me…
Did you know that patients can be awake during a heart bypass operation?
I had no idea this was possible until I just saw an incredible video on Youtube.com about patients being awake during cardiac surgery.
In India, several cardiac surgeons are pioneering heart valve operations (including valve repair and valve replacement) in which the patient is awake. No general anesthetic is used throughout the entire procedure.
I’m still a little amazed.
Keep on tickin!

Absolutely astounding! I just hope when I have to go through valve replacement surgery again (I have a porcine mitral valve now for over 8 years), that our doctors here in the west will be up to date on the latest and least invasive procedures and that I will have a good fighting chance to get through it without too much trauma, and with a good outcome/prognosis. Thanks for posting this, I know it’s about 11 years ago but I just found it….I’m also an A Fib patient, and I found it during some other research in on A Fib and valvular disease. May we all live long and Prosper, LOL!! |
