I had an Edwards tissue valve back in 2011 that the doctors thought would last up to 15 years that I got almost 10 out of before needing replaced due to stenosis (found this out before the infection). The new generation Edwards Resilia is supposed to last up to 20 years so even if I get 15-16 years out of it I will be 70 when I need to have it replaced. My surgeon at Northwestern also said they are working on medications that may address stenosis in the future so the valve may last much longer. Otherwise, I will get a TAVR at that time (the Resilia is designed to expand to allow for valve in valve) that will probably last the rest of my life. If not I can always get a 2nd TAVR during my 80s.
My thought was given the above timeline that (hopefully) means no more surgeries and the ability to do valve in valve replacements why mess with the cons that go with the mechanical valves.

Hi Charles,
Just went through a similar situation myself. Original valve and aortic root replacement in 2011 and discovered I needed the valve replaced again plus I had an infection in the root graft. Had the surgery at Northwestern in November and went with the Edwards valve which I was told should last up to 20 years (I am 54 now). Doing great and am already back to my similar workouts. Plan on having a TAVR done if/when this one gives out when I am in my 70s...let me know if you have any questions.

Charles P Hello Gregg. Thanks for your note. Very helpful. I'd be interested in your thought process on why you chose the Edwards over the other options out there. Glad to hear that you are almost back to normal. What valve was originally put in back in 2011? What method of surgery was used in November, full standard sternotomy? Thanks again!

Hey Charles,
just read your tale. I am sorry you are having to live this again. I am happy to chat and answer any questions you have as I am just coming up on a plane out of my redo surgery. I am team On-X now and pretty happy with the outcome. Be good to yourself and approach things head on. The second time around is a bit easier mentally as you know what to expect.

Charles P Hey Pat - I really appreciate your note. Sorry to hear about your experience but glad you told me as it helps reinforce my initial decision on the On-X vs tissue. I only want to do this one more time! I quickly reviewed your long thread all the way back to your first surgery. Lots of info in there. I will definitely reach out to you. Too much on my mind right now. Thanks again! And thanks to Adam Pick for setting this site up. Great idea!

Pat Bluemel @Adam I sing a chorus of praise to you as I have in the past. I am forever grateful for your work, it has saved my sanity. Twice now:-). My motto is that I hope to be of support and service after these experiences in whatever capacity I can. @Charles, hang in there, digesting the news of reeop literally took my breath away. Lots of tears, then anger, then zen. You will get there.

Hey Charles, Welcome... I mean, Welcome back! I just read your story. Wow. Double Wow. Uggh. Double Ugghh. Sorry to hear about all that you have been through. I'm imagining that syncope episode was a bit scary. That happened to me once. I ended up being rushed to the hospital. It was not related to my heart but that was tough stuff. I'm glad to hear that you are en route to see Dr. Svensson again. Great guy. If you need anything, please let me know. Fyi, I just saw your email about the unicuspid option. Yes, you are one of a few. Keep on tickin! Adam
