Waiting to see my surgeon still, his father-in-law sadly passed the night before I was due to see him last week, so I am seeing him tomorrow now. Thanks for your thoughts tho, how is everything with you?

Emily Rowley Oh no I'm sorry to hear that. Did they cancel before you arrived? I read your post about liking your Surgeon after you met him. Will you get to see him again soon? You're welcome ☺ Have the results of your CT Scan come back of or is it just so the Surgeon knows the position of your heart? I am well thanks overall, I have set backs of being unwell along the way. How are you feeling? You have inspired me to start writing poems again about Heart Journey. How's the weather? It's been really windy here!

Hey - I'm pushing 38 and found out on New Year's Day that I had BAV and the accompanying aneurysm. Going in next week for surgery to get the Darcon graft to replace the aorta and either a repair or replacement. Docs have told me I have up to a 95% chance of repair in my case because there doesn't appear to be calcification and only regurgitation. If not, I chose to go ahead with a tissue valve, as I can't see me managing Coumadin and its effects, despite my inane fear of having to do OHS once, nevermind again in the future. But, sometimes you gotta leave those battles for another day. I found the plan B stuff to be most difficult as there's a lot of conflicting information about where the technology is and is going. Some say you can use TAVR on BAV repairs, some say you really can't. This is coming from all the top rated docs out there, so I just don't think the story has been settled on yet. The good story is that the operation itself is quite mature, the results are great at top institutions with high volume and there are a bunch of developments to look forward to even if they're not completely clear yet. Anyhow, I'm shaking in my pants for next week - but wanted to reach out to say welcome and share where i was at since we're in a bit of the same boat.

Emily Rowley Hey Joe, welcome to the community. They were unsure whether they could repair mine especially the second time but they did-it's wonderful what Surgeons can do. I have been on warfarin despite a repair and it's no where as bad as I thought it would be! Where abouts are you having yours done at? I'm sure you are in safe hands! Take Care.

Stephen Doherty Hey Joe, cheers for post .. I totally agree that there is yet to be consensus re the tavr and bav, have seen conflicting info myself on the issue. My valve is heavily calcified according to the angiogram I had a couple of weeks ago on top of the severe regurgitation, though the stenosis is not too bad, so a tavr is totally not an option and ohs it is. Was due to see my surgeon last Monday, but sadly his father-in-law passed the night before, so I'm off to see him tomorrow instead and get put on the wait list for my surgery.
I agree re the blood thinners too, I'm hoping for a tissue one and deal with the possible future failure later, apparently my cardiologist thinks the surgeon may push for a mechanical one, guess I will find out tomorrow.
Best of luck for next week, I really hope it all goes to plan for you and you are up and at it sooner rather than later.

It sounds close to familiar. I was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve, with >50% regurgitation. The difference being my valve was insufficient instead of stenotic. I was 46 years old and they told me I had about 2 years to live if surgery was not done. I had open heart surgery in February of this year in Seattle. I have been back to work for 6 weeks and doing pretty well. I have not made any 100km bicycle rides post surgery, but am building my way back up and have ridden more than 40km several times.

Stephen Doherty My regurgitation (ejection factor?) is >55% .. so not real bad from what I can gather. My doctor has said she believes that I'm a prime candidate for a valve replacement due to my age, and some symptoms on hard exercise or heavy exertion .. I'm flat out riding a bike any distance or challenge without my heart trying to pound out of my chest or a huge burning pain .. I thought it was my lungs with the burning and shortness of breath and dizziness involved.
My profile pic is me having one of my 'turns' as I call them, just rock climbed a smoke stack on a cruise ship, was good fun, had no idea it was my heart was screaming at me though that it can't cope, its getting stenotic and drowning on itself with each pump, through a hole that was too small to start with. I kinda feel mean to it now. lol (I have a warped sense of humor when it comes to health, its got me through the hard stuff before.)
Awesome on your recovery, am glad its all going great guns for you, thanks for the info & I hope you hit that 100km ride soon.
