Michael Eichhorn Hi Tobias, I am 49 years old and having surgery on May 15 to replace Aortic Valve, Root and Ascending Aorta. I was also leaning toward a synthetic but my surgeon recomended mechanical. He made a good case and I believe I am going with the On-X valve.

Hi Tobias, I’m new to this community but am 10 months post open heart surgery. I too had Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Aortic Stenosis. But I also had an aneurysm they had to repair. I was 45 when I had the surgery at Yale in the States. Because of the aneurysm it had to be open heart. And because of my age the surgeon would only use a mechanical valve. I am amazed with how quickly my body has healed. But I would never want to go through that again. I would strongly recommend mechanical for a lifetime solution.

I can see why the cardiologist is pushing the mechanical valve at your younger age. You have a longer life ahead of you. If you scroll back in the Heart Valve Journal Newsfeed about 3 weeks, you can read the journals of Rune Pedersen. He has a lot of discussion on the topic.
All the best to you in your journey!

Welcome to the community, Tobias.
I had a mitral valve repair, but had advised the surgeon that tissue valve replacement would be my choice, if repair was not possible.
There are videos on this site where people explain which valve they have chosen, and why.
