Current selfie. I no longer color my hair. Quite a relief!

Richard Munson You ask if there are alternatives to splitting the sternum and the answer is yes. I had pretty much the same procedure as you at mgh and they did it minimally invasive. In laymans terms they entered my body thru my rib cage but performed the same function on my heart. Faster recovery time. There is also a robotic method which i did not have that i am told offers even faster recovery. Boils down to different ways to get to your heart.

Ginny Turner Hi Joan, and welcome! Love your beautiful picture. You will find so much information and support here. And with friends like Richard, Marie and others, you will feel very encouraged - I promise! My heart story is much like yours. I'm 73, healthy and feel well, but have severe mitral regurgitation. I've had prolapse most of my adult life but no symptoms. Only last year did the regurgitation become severe. I will have mitral and tricuspid repairs and a Maze procedure in April at the Cleveland Clinic. Mine will be full sternotomy because of having 3 procedures and the need for better access. I'm very optimistic about the outcome and can't wait to join the former patients' club. Best of luck going forward - you'll do well!

GARY STANKO Like you I had mitral regurgitation in 2017, I was 67. I was basically asymptomatic except for some fatigue but I was riding my bike 20 miles a day at the time. I had never had a serious health problem so it was a shock to find I needed heart surgery. After researching I found that the odds were overwhelmingly in my favor. I had the surgery at the Mayo Clinic and they gave me the robotic as an option but i chose the sternum route. They were able to repair the valve. I had little pain afterwards but pretty exhausted. Have been doing great since. I did find the metroporal causing me to be out of breath but got them to adjust the doseage. You'll do great just take your time getting back to normal.

Thank you Richard, I have visited there twice. Rustic is a good word for it. We went to a very good restaurant there by a lake, can’t remember the name. Also, it was the first time and hope the last one, that I saw a bear cub, beautiful but my brother wouldn’t let me pet it because he said the momma must be close by. Oh well
