About Me (In My Own Words)
Had my Aortic Valve repaired in the early 90's when I was about 5. Then in 2009 I had the Ross Procedure because I knew I would want to have kids someday. Flash forward to October 2016 my husband and I decided we wanted to start a family. I had approval from all my doctors that we were good to try and conceive. I was very lucky to get pregnant quickly and was having very no real issues. My cardiologist did want to have an echo done at the end of the first trimester which I did. Unfortunately two days after the echo it was discovered that I had a missed miscarriage. A few days after the d&c, my cardiologist recommended that based on my echo I have a transesophageal echocardiogram done (April 2017). The results showed that although my valves appear to be good, a membrane is causing obstruction of my aortic outflow tract (subvalvular aortic stenosis). I am scheduled for surgery August 18, 2017 to have the membrane or obstruction removed and if needed the surgeon will go ahead and replace the aortic valve.
Update 10/8/2018: I am happy to say surgery went really well and I was out of the hospital in 5 days. It has since been over a year and I feel like a brand new person. Its crazy how much better I felt almost immediately. Walking into the hospital I got short of breath but the day after surgery when the hospital had me up and walking around I could tell immediately how much better I could breath and that I no long had that tightness in my chest. Two months after surgery we were allowed to start trying for children again, and although it took a little longer than I would have liked (completely unrelated to my heart) I am happy to say we are now expecting in April 2019! I am considered high risk but mostly it's just to keep an extra eye on my heart and to screen for potential issues with the baby's heart. My only complaint a year after surgery is I have a large keloid at the top of my incision that is still very red, itchy, and sensitive, but I see my Dr. here in a few weeks so I hope to address it with him at that time.
