About Me (In My Own Words)
My first journal entry tells how my aortic valve issue was uncovered. But basically I have had a murmur as long as I can remember. Always thought it was due to having rheumatic fever as a child. But turned out it was a congenital bi valve when should have had three flaps.
Ultimately had my surgery at Plano Heart Hospital by Dr. William Ryan. Had a bovine tissue aortic valve replacement and a repair of an aneurism on the ascending aorta on 10/23/2012. I literally owe my life to my GP (Dr. Raul Villalon) who insisted I get to a cardiologist; to my cardiologist (Dr. Raul Santos) for his thorough evaluation and recommendations; to Dr. Ryan for his amazing surgical knowledge and skills; to the staff at the hospital for stellar postoperative care; and especially to the Lord for tricking me into the process when I was too stubborn to take the direct route. My husband deserves a medal for his patience through all this, and my son was very brave and kind in supporting Curt during the surgery! Our friends are more precious than I can express for their support and encouragement.
Added note - 10/21/2016: there is LIFE after surgery! I had some short-term memory loss for nearly a year that was pretty frightening sometimes. But it evaporated over time and things came back. It is so important to remember that this is not only a physical - but also an emotional and spiritual journey. Give yourself time afterwards to let things settle in all three areas.
Expect to get better and trust time, rest, exercise, God, and family to help you get there! Hugs to each of you!
