About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with aorta stenosis, awhile ago. My open heart surgery is March 20, 2025. I am the main caregiver to my husband who has dementia and congestive heart failure, we are definitely quite a pair. My surgery was canceled last week, and brought forward to next Thursday. All had to be arranged while my husband would be in
a nursing home for 1 month, so I could heal, before having nurses for both of us at home. I told my surgeon, I got this, let's do it. Not necessarily looking forward to the actual operation, thankful I will be out from start to finish.
Both my adult kids are taking the day off work to be at the hospital, since my husband is better at the nursing home.
I just found this website, answered to Bob, from Walmer Kent England. I wanted to mention Bob is an hour away from family I have in Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, Kent England. I am in Ontario Canada. I had such wonderful feelings reading the stories of people going through heart surgery, that I thought I would join. You believe your before and after stories are a great comfort to people about to go through heart surgery, even being apprehensive. I felt a calmness, and regained my strong positive attitude back. Bless all of you who are waiting and the ones that have already had heart surgery. Thank you for adding me to your page.
This is a P.S.
My doctors concerns are family history:
Dad died at 74, heart, my brother died at 78, after his heart operation. I am 76, and need full open heart surgery.
My surgeon said, I have such a great attitude, she can't wait for me to ..wake up.. I do not have symptoms, yet I have severe aorta stenosis.
I have a saying. (Just like Tom Hank)..there's no crying in Tillsonburg...not sure I can keep that one, but have so far.
This Community deserves more praise, for holding us all up. Where would we be without all of you?
Sue
I had my open heart surgery on March 20, 2025. So thankful for all of you, your stories and encouragement meant a lot.
I was in ICU for 3 days, left the hospital after 8 days. I had a nurse friend stay with me for 1 week and my daughter stayed with me for 2 weeks, she goes home on Sat. It helps that she is a gourmet cook, so definitely spoiled. I walk, do most of my activities, rest in between, will be able to drive by mid to end of May. My personal journey, was mixed emotions before surgery, to be expected since we do not know outcomes. I had to have a blood transfusion during the operation, but that was discussed thoroughly by the surgeon beforehand. I was so, so tired after, a little nauseous, but was able to do my walks and do 11 stairs up and down. That would not have been a big deal before, but I felt like I won a marathon. I will be fine after my daughter goes home. My husband will need care for his dementia and congestive heart failure, but we have that covered with a psw and day care.
I am doing just fine, so thankful for my wonderful, caring surgeon. I want you to know if you have any apprehension regarding surgery...this too shall pass. I have so much praise for the people on this site, so brave, so informative.
Thank you, thank you.
Sue
