About Me (In My Own Words)
During a routine visit my GP detected a heart murmur. Testing by my cardiologist lead to a diagnosis of severe mitral regurgitation.
I was asymptomatic and had a very difficult time deciding to have the surgery. Once I understood the damage the regurgitation was doing to my heart, I decided to go ahead with it and am very glad that I did.
Despite having reached the conclusion that proceeding with the procedure was the right choice, there is no way to express the amount of anxiety I felt as surgery approached. However, Dr. Chikwe assured me that she and her team would take good care of me and that is exactly what they did. The surgeons, anesthesiologists, RNs, and everyone else I came into contact with were all very warm, caring, and supportive. My regurgitation went from severe to none after surgery
It is now less than three weeks after the minimally invasive surgery. My incisions have almost healed and I am walking four miles a day.
