Got a call today from Dr. Adam's office with two choices for my surgery date. Either November 17th or December 7th. The first date in Nov would be a "live" surgery(other surgeons observing-learning).I think that is great thing but it would mean I would be there for Thanksgiving. The other date would get me home the week before Christmas if I don't have any complications. I told them I would call back Monday with my decision.

Anna Jones On the other hand, if you have the surgery before Thanksgiving, you should be feeling much better for Christmas, than if you have the surgery just before Christmas. It's a difficult decision, but I know you will make the right choice for yourself. Sending best wishes.
Craig Irving I agree with Anna. If you do the November surgery you'll feel a lot better for Christmas.

Rose Madura I agree with the others about November. If you wait for December, you'll only have the surgery "hanging over your head" for Thanksgiving. The choice is a personal one and I'm sure you'll make the right one.

Gerald Poulton I would take the early surgery date, I had the same choice and just before and during post op I regretted not taking the earlier date, you will be further along at Christmas and be more thankful.
All the best either way 💐
Betty Sorey Thanks everyone for your comments and encouragement. The advice given is very helpful.

Phyllis Petersen It's hard to be so far from home for holidays, but I know I wanted the earliest date I could get. The weather will be chilly, but little chance of snow in November. Do you have a laptop so you can Skype home. When you know where you'll be staying that weekend, find a comfy restaurant and make a reservation. This way you'll be surrounded by lots of others. Will someone be able to travel with you?

My mitral valve regurgitation has gotten to the severe stage and my cardiologist says it is time to have surgery. I think I am still a little bit in shock that it is actually to that stage. I have been having my mitral valve monitored since I was in my early 20s and I am now in my 50s. I have a Barlow syndrome valve which is complicated and harder to repair. The surgeon that i have seen locally wants to do a replacement but I have gotten a second opinion from a doctor at Mt Sinai in New York who says they can repair it. I want to go with the repair but it is daunting thinking of the distance that I would have to travel (l live in Mississippi).
Adam Pick Hey Betty - If possible, the repair is preferable. Given what you write above, I think you might like ... Read more

Darlene Smith Betty, I had my mitral valve repaired by Dr. Adams last year. Outstanding surgeon, outstanding person. Very approachable. Coming from Mississippi is daunting, but I'd do it if I were you. I asked him the last time he replaced when he thought he could repair a valve and he said "early 2000's".

Phyllis Petersen I travelled from Tucson to Cleveland to have the type of repair I wanted. With your additional issues, it is definitely worth travelling to a surgeon who is familiar with your specific problem. Much of my earlier testing was done here and I was able to do a marathon day and a half of pre-surgical testing and meetings. It was definitely worth it. All the best!
