The countdown is on! My surgery is in four days (November 8, aortic and mitral valve replacements) Wow, just writing that down makes it more real. Thank you to everyone who shares their stories post op. I look forward to having positive words to share with others as they go through valve replacement/repair and recovery.
Hoping this will not be too difficult for my family and we'll all be looking back at this time a year from now with much gratitude.

Two week countdown to surgery! I'm not as nervous as I think I will be as the surgery approaches. Too many things to get done and in place before I can get caught up in the stress of it. I added a Calm app to my phone, hopefully this will get through some of those tough spots.
Thinking of all who are getting ready for surgery. May we all have the best outcomes and speedy recoveries.
Catie B All the best to you, Cara, during the lead up and for and excellent surgery and recovery!

I have a complicated medical history and have been hoping to connect with others that might have gone through what I have gone through. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease @ seventeen. I had chemo and back then high dose radiation (1989) which most likely has caused my heart problems. I also had an autologous bone marrow transplant (1990). I am here and have had a great life. In 2006, I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and leaky valves. (mitral & aortic). In 2011, I had my mitral valve repaired.
Like most people, I've been going on with life, actually became healthier and fit. Now I've been told I need to have both of these valves replaced, I have a great cardiologist but had so many questions, especially why now. I got those questions answered this week. I have scheduled my surgery for November 8, 2017.
I'm more settled with the reason for doing this now vs. later but it doesn't make me any less scared of such a major surgery. Any advice or support of how to prepare yourself and be ready for what lies ahead would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara Wood Hi Cara & welcome to this site! I am not a hodgkins survivor, there are several here, but I have had radiation for left side breast cancer & 4 months ago had my mitral valve repaired. And my surgeon felt the valve damage was from the radiation. It sounds like you have a lot of confidence in your team, that's important I think. I was shocked & scared when I first joined here, but gained so much knowledge & confidence just by reading so many people's journals & following along with postings - it was invaluable to me! And the support here is great. I see you are from Sugar Hill...Sugar Hill, New Hampshire by any chance? Feel free to ask any questions,we'll all be happy to answer as best we can! All the best to you:)

Craig Irving I had lymphoma in 1990, when I was 10. In 1999 it was discovered that I had mild aortic stenosis and regurgitation, and that my heart was slightly enlarged. I was sent home from the service because of it and proceeded to live my life in ignorant bliss, until about 2006 when I decided that I should find a cardiologist to check my heart out. He felt that it was caused by the chemo treatments. Long story short; we controlled my condition with meds and I felt great until this year. I had my aortic valve replaced Sept 5 and I feel better.

Rita Savelis There are several people on this site who had Hodgkin's disease and consequently had to have heart valves replaced. I had terrible chemo and radiation for Hodgkin's at age 15, and had 2 heart valves replaced (aortic, mitral) and an unexpected third one repaired (tricuspid) plus aun unexpectd pacemaker at age 54 two years ago. Sadly, all this is due to radiation. When you have cancer treatment at a young age, and especially chest radiation, there are long term side effects (thyroid, heart valves, breast cancer....) I am sorry that you have to go through with this, but I imagine you have a heart surgeon who is specialised in former Hodgkin's patients, as our valve problems are very specific and we usually have scarred lungs from our former radiation.
Take care. You've been through a lot.
