I met with a surgeon this week who said it was time to do another replacement. He recommended an open heart procedure with a mechanical valve this time ( I am currently 61 years old). My previous tissue valve only lasted 6.5 years which is why he is recommending the mechanical. Because of the high pressures in my arteries he is recommending the open heart instead of a minimally invasive procedure.
I am having problems wrapping my head around being on warfarin the rest of my life and all that entails but there are no guarantees that another tissue valve would last any longer than it did this time.
He referred me to another doctor for a second opinion on the how and what.
Does anyone have any advice on a mechanical valve and warfarin they could share?

Rita Savelis I got my 2 mechanical valves 8 years ago at age 53. I was terrified of having to take coumadin and thought about it constantly for the first months. Then I got used to it. I eat what I want. I test about once a month. I decide on my own med dose. INR will go up and down - that's what it does - it's not static. So it can be difficult at first to get used to that. Some patients get stable very quiclly, others take more time. It's all normal. In a perfect world I would not be on anticoagulants, but life goes on. There are so many conditions which require meds. I hear you. It's a lot to take in. But one step at a time. I'm sorry that you have to have heart surgery again. Take care.
