I had a mitral (mechanical) valve replacement 5yrs ago, 2 days after my op i had to have a pacemaker fitted. What should have been a 5'-7 day in hospital I ended up spending 21 days.
I was in ICU twice as fluid was leaking into my lungs so a drain had to be fitted. Overall I felt Crap & the pain was excruciating, (sorry to be so blunt).
6 months on & my Dr told me my life expectancy would be 3-5yrs. Although it was a shock I decided I would not let it bother me & live my life peacefully doing & eating whatever I liked.
I'm on 12 tablets a day & have an inr test every 2-3wks.
I've just passed my 5th year & after seeing my cardiologist he recons I could have a few more years left in me.
Although I look athletic & healthy for my age (66), I get tired easily & out of breath with any exertion.
Other than that I'm Good.

Rita Savelis Hi Gerald. Happy 5 years. Thanks for your honest update. I also got an (unexpected) pacemaker after valve replacement. I also spent 3 weeks in hospital with complications. I can relate. I get out of breath and tire easily. Keep living peacefully, doing and eating whatever you like Gerald. Take care.
James Roberts Great to hear your positive attitude. What went wrong if you don’t mind me asking?

Deena Z Gerald, what a positive attitude and it worked! 5 years and more to come. Thanks for sharing your story. Not sure why the surgeon/cardiologist gave you such a longevity prognosis, but you proved him wrong. Do you ever get a second opinion?
