I qualified for the Boston Marathon at age 60 and was in the 2013 race. I did not
finish because of the bombing. Three months later, I noted skipped beats (PVCs)
and saw a cardiologist who detected a murmur leading to an echo and a diagnosis
of a bicuspid valve. I was followed for 4 years before it was replaced in
2018.
After
surgery, I developed PVC's and PACs with exercise, but by walking instead of
running, the skipped beats decreased, and my thoughts turned to finishing
Boston. Qualifying is no longer in the cards, so I'm hoping to get a charity
bib (it generally requires a fundraising goal of $10K) and the ability to
finish in 6 hours. The application is in
September and the race is April 2025, but training has started. I am up to six miles at a walking pace that
will allow a required six-hour finish.

Gil Solomon received a new aortic valve at UCLA that is more durable, reducing the need for an additional replacement when he is older.

Wayne Sykes Gil, thanks so much for all the sourced information. I still have more of it to read, but have what I've already read is applicable and very helpful. Best wishes to you in getting well, and hopefully over time in shape again. I may post you again to let you know how I'm doing etc. or with any questions. I'm scheduled to have a cardioversion Friday, August 3rd if I don't naturally get back into a normal heart beat. Best.

Wayne Sykes Gil, just read your story that was posted. Great article. You're a great athlete, and I'm sure you'll be working on all cylinders in short order. Maybe not doctor's orders, but short order nonetheless!!
