I had Rheumatic Fever when I was 11, I am now 78 and facing Mitral and Tricuspid Valve repair/or replacement surgery on December 22, 2021. I was always told I didn't have a heart murmur from when I had RF, but life is catching up with me. I was in A-Fib in 2019, had an ablation and have been out of A-Fib since then. My cardiologist had me have an ultrasound of my heart every 3 months since the ablation, the Mitra Valve has been getting progressively worse. So now it is time for repair or replacement. I have a very compete heart surgeon, but feel very nervous about recovery. Any words of wisdom will be appreciated! Thank you. (I have had back surgery w/ fusion and R/L hips replaced, so it's not like I don't know what is ahead of me, but this surgery feels scarier! Speaking straight from my "heart"!

Richard Munson I’ve got some great news. Almost a year after minimally invasive mitral valve surgery and maze for a fib. 78 years old, same as you, now 79. So far, god willing, i am doing great with no a fib recurrence. 1-20-22 will be one year. Just got off the treadmill and walked cassie 2 miles today. Currently driving my wife nuts playing my favorite xmas song by tom petty , xmas all over again. You’re going to do great. The fear of not waking up is a familiar one, that we all experienced. I had it until the minute before they put me under. As you can see i woke up. I will be 80 soon after my 1 year anniversary date. I’ll bake us a cake.

Richard Munson As an afterthought, if it helps. If you have a great hospital and surgeon , work hard after the surgery, have a good attitude and a sense of humor, you will be rewarded with success. I never found this site till after my surgery. When i was a few seconds away from being under i told the anesthesiologist that if i did not wake up i would haunt him. I remember him laughing as i zonked out. We all want to hear from you after you wake up.

Jeanne Hay Richard Munson Thank you so very much for your words of encouragement. I so need them. E.A.C.H. W.O.R.D. I am so happy for the wonderful progress you have made, you give me hope and I like your advice too - keep a good attitude (which I usually have, but have to admit it has been down a bit) sense of humor, that always helps. You too, keep on walking your doggie, dancing and enjoying life. I will post ...on the other side .....of surgery :) !!!!

Richard Munson 12-22 -21 is close at hand. I will look forward to hearing from you once you are able. A lot of the technical aspects of heart surgery speak for themselves of course but i am convinced how important the attitude component is toward recovery. I hooked up an ipod to my treadmill playing all my golden oldies ( frankie vallie, beachboys, even queen
And others). As a late 70 er you no doubt know them. My intention was to make my long term recovery as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Less like work. Yes, i sing along. Singing is good heart medicine. Lol.
