Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. My 20 year old son is scheduled to have a surgery on April 9th. He was born with a bicuspid valve and has developed an anyurizm from it. This is all fairly new to us. His doctor told us 5 years ago that he wouldn't have any heart issues until the age of 60 and now he re we are prepping for surgery. The book has been extremely helpful and reading your posts have been very informative.

Steven Perrotta I know how you feel Julie. I went from watching my BAV to you need surgery in just a few months. But here is wishing your son a successful recovery. And good luck to you too. I know my mom is probably more worried about me than I am.

Helen Daw My grandmother discovered she had Mitral Valve problems when she was fairly young and lived to be 102 without any surgeries. I guess she was one lucky lady. I just had my surgery 7 weeks ago and I am 50. All the best to your son. 20 is very young, but he is lucky that medicine is so advanced now that he will live a normal life.

Rose Madura So sorry to hear. I had same diagnosis in the early 1960s and thankfully did not need surgery until 59-1/2 years of age. You son is young and presumably strong. Most younger people do quite well. I know it's scary but remember the doctors do this every day with a very high success rate. Will be praying.

Michael Cline Hi Julie, At 2 yrs old I was discovered with an BAV. Growing up my mother would take me to a cardio every year thereafter. He would say "See you next year Mike". I'm 54 now and this January my cardio said "It's time". So I called my mother and told her that I needed the valve replaced. She said "No big deal, just get it done and you were lucky to have your valve hold out this long". That had a calming affect on me. I also have a friend who is 55 yrs old and at 21 had his BAV replaced with a mechanical valve and has been living a highly productive life. He owns a construction business so he is physical everyday. Your son is very fortunate to have a loving mother who took great interest in his health. Your son will get through this. God Bless.
Prayers and best wishes coming your way.
