Rita Savelis Hi KD. I've had 2 mechanical valves since 2015 and I drink alcohol. Usually in moderation (2 drinks). Know that alcohol can make yr INR go up. If you are a big drinker, maybe try to drink a bit less. I haven't changed anything that I eat or drink since being on anticoagulants. Everything in moderation. I manage my own meds. INR goes up and down no matter what. And it's okay to have too much to drink occasionally. Life goes on. Take care.

J Alexander Lassally If you mean valve life expectancy the general number I hear is 10-15. Predicated on a great surgeon doing a great job. If you mean person life expectancy that is a wildly different question !! Obviously, there would be a lot of re-repairs/replacements on someone 45 when the replacement wears out - and TAVR choices etc.

Rita Savelis A mechanical valve should last 20 years or more. Many last 30-40 years or as long as one lives. Life expectancy is calculated using many variables. I'd ask your doctor if you'd like an answer for your specific case. But it would only be an estimate. It's not something I've ever thought about actually.
