my name is Ken and I have just been diagnosed with Aortic Valve Stenosios. The echo said it was severe. I was wondering what a typical time period might be from the initial echocardiogram to the time the surgery takes place, in general terms.
Thank you for any information.

John Jones Hello Ken, I was diagnosed with severe aortic valve stenosis the last of May this year. My replacement surgery is July, 6. I do not know if this is typical. When were you diagnosed? You have found a great resource in this website. It has been a huge comfort to me as many of my questions have been answered here. I will be praying for you.

Ray Lockhart Ken, First you should get a second opinion which will include getting a second echo or sending a copy of your echo (disk, not report) to an institution you respect. I was told 13 years ago that I needed an AVR very soon. I sought a second opinion from Cleveland Clinic and they disagreed. I have gone 13 years without surgery. Presently, however, the stenosis has become more severe and the CC doctor recommended I get it fixed within three months. He was concerned that if I waited too much longer there could be damage to my heart. Sorry, that doesn't help much. It can be a very long or a very short time.
Suzanne Hunter I was 8 weeks from echo with severe aortic stenosis to my actual op.

Elaine Foster When I was diagnosed with AVS, my Dr. said it was moderate. Told me anywhere from 1 to 5 years to surgery. 2 years later, it was severe, and 3months later I had AVR. Each case is different, they should be able to tell you a number, and mine was .61, if I remember right. But, only your Dr. can answer your specific questions. Don't hesitate to ask them.

Lynn understock I was told in November 2014 that my diagnosis changed to severe after being followed thirty years. My cardiologist told me I would need surgery within one year. I was asymptomatic but at end of February noticed what I can best describe as a tooth ache type pain in my chest. Doctor had me come in .... do an echo.....then an angiogram....then found out had aneurysm at 4.5 with aortic root dilation. That was on March 30th...had surgery on April 9th. Am returning to work next week...for most part feel great. Listen to your body for anything different...you will know.

John Noriega Ken...if you trust your cardiologist then talk about the surgery. I was diagnosed 4 years ago and we watched it annually. Then on September 10, 2014 my aortic valve was at .9. I had symptoms of shortness of breath, pain down the left arm and not sleeping well. I had an angiogram done on October 2 to check all of my valves. They were all clear except for the aortic so we scheduled surgery for October 17. The decision was made for me due to severity of the stenosis. If you do feel that you need a second opinion, by all means, do so! It's your prerogative and your body, heart and life. So, what I'm saying is it all depends on the factors. You have to do what is necessary. I am here 8 months later feeling better than I have in years and enjoying the fact that life is continuing and enjoying many more different things and my family as well. The entire decision is yours, but do not hesitate! Another thing to know is there are a bunch of people here with different stories, diagnoses, experiences, but with the same common goal - to live a new life. Many of us are also praying for all who join this blog. So know that you'll get good advice from our combined experiences. If you haven't read Adam's book, I suggest you do...it helped me immensely! Hoping this helps you. Onward & Upward!

Ken Quick Thank you John. I have resigned myself to the surgery but am hoping I can hold it off till summer is over. I live in Portland Oregon and the summers are the nicest and driest part of the year. I would rather be inside recuperating when the rains come. I think. Take care
