Hopefully my journey will give some insight to living with an artificial heart valve. I was diagnosed in sept. Of 2004. From the time I was six years old I had a murmur but none of my drs ever went further than telling me “just a murmur” probably nothing to worry about. Then this one dr listened to my heart heard the murmur and encouraged me to follow up with an echocardiogram. What they found was a bicuspid aortic valve with a near aneurysm in my aortic artery. Jan 17, 2005 my valve was replaced with a st. Jude along with replacing a small section of my aortic artery. Other than taking blood thinners and making small adjustments to my lifestyle you would never know I had any thing ever done. I stay active either by walking or riding a bike (air dyne) I do lightweight lifting and faithfully take my Coumadin and Bp meds. But honestly my life changed very little after the surgery. I’m just thankful that I found a dr that encouraged me to find out what the murmur was. I welcome all replies and questions, I’m happy to share my experience with anyone that has been on this journey.
