Just released from the hospital following quadruple bypass surgery, experienced many of the common side effects and recovery issues that are a "staple" of open-heart surgery. However, soon after coming off the vent following surgery in CVCU, I noticed an intense combination of soreness & numbness throughout my scalp region. Mainly at the top/back portion of my scalp, I was experiencing what felt like intensely numb soreness, if that accurately describes it, and after asking the ICU staff about it and being told it was most likely a result of being immobilized so intensely during the procedure, I assumed it would eventually dissipate, but it has not and I'm kinda concerned about it because it is a horribly uncomfortable feeling that also effects the quality of sleep or rest I can attain! Anyone else experience that feeling or know what I am referring to???

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Paul. Congratulations on just being released(Isn't that the best feeling)? and also getting through the surgery itself! I don't have a certain answer to your question other than to say that after my Valve surgery I felt a variety of pressures on the back, top and sides of my head off and on for weeks after returning home. I attributed it to the many different positions I chose in several chairs to get comfortable while trying to make sure I got in a bit of walking and resting( as comfortable as the "sternum" incision would allow.) I would have a pressure and sometimes lightweight headaches also coming and going for a bit but most of these have stopped. I am at a little over 5 months Post op. I was told that these types of pressures are considered normal post-op especially& since they produced no pain but a bit of uncomfortable pressure not unlike feelings you get with shift in barometric pressure during weather changes nothing to be concerned with-just part of the healing process. I doubt this helps much but I am sure you will hear shortly from others who may be of more help. Take care and Happy Healing.
Jim Kelly-Evans Glad to read you've been discharged. Hope the scalp issue resolves quickly.
