My husband who is 53 was supposed to have Ross procedure w Dr El-Hamamsy at Mt Sinai in New York this week. But his pulmonary valve had fenestrations/ openings so was not suitable for the Ross. They can’t predict ahead of time even w cardiac MRI what the pulmonary valve looks like. Always only know on visual check in OR.
Ended up with a Bio valve Inspirus Resilia 27 mm which is a large diameter valve.
Although we are disappointed that Ross wasn’t feasible, Dr.El-Hamamsy as always is the Boss. Praying that this valve lasts forever🙏🏽
Just wanted to put his story out there for the rest of patients and families. Happy to talk/email with anyone. Priya Pa07726@yahoo.com

Deena Z So many hard decisions at times with the surgery. You're right. The only true test is when your sternum/rib is accessed and the surgeon can actually see your heart in real time. The best news is that your husband's surgery was successful!!! As for the future, advances in heart surgery are a fast pace. If your husband ever needs an "adjustment" in the future, it ought to be fixed via a less invasive procedure. . Good to be alive and well. #be in the now.

Amy Berger Morning Priya - hope recovery is going better every day! Quick question, any suggestions for what my husband should expect when I come back to ICU or during my recovery? I really feel for our partners, as a patient in some way I think I will have it easier than him ..

Deena Z Amy- expect for your husband to be beyond exhausted, though the morning after surgery the nurse will get him out of bed into chair. I asked if i could go to sleep, that was a definite no. I ended back in bed in about 30 seconds, because my BP tanked instantly. Was okay later that day. Dont expect much of an appetite first day or two. My family brought me high dose protein shakes; protein is essential to get hemoglobin back up. May not taste that good, but no worries because taste buds are way off from anesthesia. Above all, dont be concerned, the ICU staff are Amazing.

Danielle Elizabeth It’s always so hard emotionally when the plan is changed, especially with something so personal as health. At least he had the option of Ross with a suitable backup plan and the surgery was a success. I hope that follow up care for a bio prosthetic valve isn’t too tedious, and that your husband has a speedy recovery
