Susan Lynn Richard - an extremely high percentage of mitral valves are repaired. My surgeon didn't even ask me about a preference. You may want to ask your surgeon what percentage of repairs he does. If there's only a 5% probability of replacement, you'll probably have an easier time with your final decision. Best of luck!

so I finally decided on the doctor, Dr Lewis in Birmingham, on 4/30. I saw him few weeks ago so he can judge whether robotic procedure would be even possible. In his own terms "it will be a challenge" but he and his surgical assistant think they can do it. I just hope they can take care of all the problems without complications (fix the valve, treat Afib and get rid of it, and clip the atrial appendage) It will be nice to be able to move about without gasping for breath and being drenched in sweat.
