I have been reluctant to post as I do not wish to add to anyone's pre-op anxiety. I had my mitral valve successfully repaired on August 24 and was successfully extubated after surgery. Sometime on August 25 I went into respiratory distress and was re-intubated and placed in a medically induced coma. What I have been able to discern from the doctors and my medical records is that I developed bacterial pneumonia and sepsis among other things. It is only by the grace of God, excellent doctors and nursing staff, and a lot of prayers and support from family and friends that I am able to write this journal entry. I was in the medially induced coma in ICU from August 25 until I woke up on September 20 with someone asking me the do you know where you are questions. My favorite was what day comes after Tuesday :) When I woke up I realized the last thing I remembered was being transported from my room to the O.R. on Aug 24. That is a huge lapse of time and a bit unnerving. I can't speak to postop pain from the surgery because by the time I woke up I was pretty well healed. I didn't even know we had gone through hurricane Irma. Again thankful for friends and family who secured my valuables and my home. I had no damage. I was released from the hospital on September 25 to my home with home health care and a month of home physical and occupational therapy. I came home with some essential tremors in my left arm and hands which have mostly subsided. Even at this point I still have no stamina or endurance, but I finally started cardiac / pulmonary rehab this past Wednesday. I believe it will make a big difference. My memory in general seems to have taken a big hit. My short term is really bad. Hoping as time goes by it will get better. I feel very fortunate to feel as good as I do. Slow and steady with a lot of "new normals". As I write this I am wearing a Holter monitor as they think I may have developed Afib. The post op echo showed not even one drop of a leak in my newly repaired mitral valve. That was a big relief. Wishing all of you a Happy and Healthy 2018.

Rita Savelis Don't be reluctant to post Sandra.... and thank you for sharing everything. I'm sorry you had to go through OHS, and especially experience complications. It must be so strange to have a month you can't remember. Stamina and endurance take some time to get back, even without complications... and short term memory as well. Slow and steady is a good motto. Wishing you a healthy 2018.

Just home from my preop. They did another echo and I actually could see my free swinging mitral valve flap. My surgery is this Thursday 8/24 although for some reason I didn't make the list. Prayers and healing thoughts to everyone else having their surgeries this week. Personally I just want to get it done and am looking forward to feeling a whole lot better.

I am facing my MVR with median sternotomy with my biggest fear being the anesthesia and whether they will be able to get me off the ventilator. I have COPD and chronic bronchitis, also sleep apnea. I have been cleared for the surgery by a critical care pulmonologist of my surgeon's choosing and I realize I may develop postop pneumonia. Hoping someone in the group had similar risks and would share their experience. Except for some shortness of breath and my cough I am otherwise asymptomatic.

Lynda Ruiz I have your same 3 symptoms. At home at 5200' altitude I use oxygen. My surgery was in TX at 600'. My tube came out during the night and since I did not bring my own CPAP with nasal pillows they used a bipap. I did not like the tube in my throat while being awake. I had to kinda sign in the air to answer questions the nurse was asking my sister. The bipap was claustrophobic and I had to relax myself to get through it. By morning I was only on oxygen and remained on it for the week I was in hospital.
Sandra Noetzel Thank you Lynda. Sounds like you did well.

Surgery is 3 weeks away. Anxiety has been off the charts. When I asked my Dr about restrictions until my surgery he said the only thing he did NOT want me to do was sit on the couch and worry. So...I figured it would be nice to come home after surgery to a clean and organized house and it would also be therapeutic to do it. It is helping!!
Rita Savelis Your doctor sounds wonderful as does your worry solution! Best of wishes for the next 3 weeks.

Nancy James Hi Sandra...your post sounded a lot like me. on April 28 my Humana in-home wellness PA told me I had a heart murmur which I had no idea I had. June 6 was my yearly wellness check with my doctor - he listened to my chest and back and as he was walking away I said that the PA said I had a heart murmur (he didn't even hear it at first) He came back and listened again and said yes it does sound like it - this was my doctor since 1979 - never a word about a heart murmur. He ordered an echocardiogram which I had about a week or so afterwards, a couple of days later he called with the explanation that I had an aortic heart valve that is regurgitating and he wanted to set up an appointment with a cardiologist. I said okay....and on June 27 I saw him and he confirmed the problem and shocked me when he said I needed a valve replacement pretty soon. I had my second appointment with him last week after all the necessary tests were done and my husband went with me this time thankfully, and that's when he said I needed a new aorta too - he somehow thought I knew that and both my husband and I looked at each other and said no you never said that. The doctor spent an hour with us explaining things to us and I had a list of 26 questions that I had typed out - he took the time to answer every question...so my confidence in him when way up the chart. However, I want another opinion at UVA (I live in Virginia) and am now waiting to hear when I will get to see another doctor. I feel like the bottom dropped out of my heart and life. I can't think, I can't stop being anxious and nervous - i wake up nervous after taking Zoloft to sleep at night. I totally get what you are going through and will keep you in prayer. I guess we'll get through it, but it is the anticipation - the not knowing - the fear that will I come out of this okay or will there be complication - how will my life change - will it be better or will it be less than what I think it will be....it's hard. But I am so excited that Adam Pick made it possible for patients to share our hopes, dreams, fears and successes...God bless.
