Dear Abhijit, I just wanted to let you know that I was also very worried about the tubes and the removal of them. Ended up that the chest tube was removed while I was still in ICU the first day and because of the heavy duty medicine I was on I really had no pain with the big one. The breathing tube was very uncomfortable waking up but was removed within the hour and a huge relief to get out (again not painful). I had a lot of coughing for the first several weeks after surgery because of the breathing tube. It was uncomfortable but not a huge problem. The breathing exercises to help inflate my lungs were tiring but not painful. Just make sure to do them for however long they tell you to. I am really wimpy with pain and can honestly tell you that they managed it much, much better that my imagination thought. Good luck this week. We will all be sending our best thoughts and prayers to you and your team

Susan Lynn Abhijit - I had similar worries about the tube removal, but had no recollection of the breathing tube - not even a sore throat- and the chest tubes were also no problem. Every step of the process was quite tolerable and every day gets you closer to full recovery. You'll do just fine! Think positively!
After getting your feedback and from others too I am now not so worried about pain from tube removal. I had a TransEsophageal Cardiogram about 6 weeks ago and when I woke up I was blown away by the fact that I had zero sensation of having had a tube down my throat for about 20 minutes. This time the duration is much much longer but I am hoping my recovery sensation is the same.
Well, it is less than 48 hours to the big day so I will just stop worrying and prepare the mind to just get along with it. So thank you again as sharing your experience. It helps a lot.

Susan Lynn Anihijit - You've got this! Hoag's cardiac surgeons have a great reputation. My twin (pictured in my photo) lives a block away from Hoag in Newport Beach. Do what you can to relax - you'll be ready. Remember, it's a quick nap and it's finished. Waiting is truly the hardest part. All the best to you!

Marie Myers My whole open heart experience was not as bad/ painful/ scary as my worrying mind would have me believe. Pain was not a big factor for me, but my aching upper back and shoulders and overall fatigue were my biggest problems. I wonder if a muscle relaxant might have helped me in the early post op period. We will be looking for your post op posts !

Pamela Gregory As Marie said, I was surprised that my back and shoulders hurt as much as anything else from being on the table during surgery. Fatigue was definitely surprising although everyone on this site warned me about that

ABHIJIT BASU Thank you everyone for your words of comfort and encouragement. I have always been a very optimistic person so I do feel confident that with the blessings of the good Lord it will all turn out fine. Yes, Hoag has a great reputation and so far everyone I met through all the tests and preparations have been very friendly and competent. Also, my grandson was born at Hoag and so I have great faith that good things happen here :)
Welcome to recovery
You are doing great . Enjoy every day .
