Hi Andrea,

My dad just went through a similar situation (we thought he had to replace both aortic and mitral valves but at the end they just replaced the aortic and repaired the mitral valve). The days before the surgery were the worst for us - if we can help you guys in any way please let us know. I am confident Dean's surgery will be a success and he is in our prayers.

Andrea Babcock Thank you so much Geraldo!!! To top it off we just found out yesterday that Dean's 93 year old otherwise fairly healthy Dad needs a Pacemaker and they will do the surgery this Friday. It's a lot right now... Now we are very worried for him this week.

Hi Andrea,
I was told not to put any type of cream, ointment, etc. on my incision until it was completely healed. Definitely keep it out of the sun for the first year, a Rash guard shirt is a great idea.
My dermatologist said that if you do develop a raised scar(some people do, some do not) you can put a silicone strip on it which can sometimes help. You can find these at a CVS store. I have used one occasionally, as additional sun protection, if I am wearing a thinner shirt. An injection of cortisone by a dermatologist is another optional treatment for keloids. My dermatologist said studies using Merderma and such products showed little difference on scars than using nothing at all.
