Dear Barbara, I was a candidate for minimal invasive aortic valve and root replacement procedure as well through the right side of my chest as an alternative to open heart surgery. Will your surgeon perform the same procedure or a mini sternotomy. My surgeon operated between the ribs and didn't break any breastbone. You will heal much quicker than open heart surgery usually 2-3 weeks instead of 8-9 weeks with open heart surgery. You will have shorter time in the hospital, faster recovery, and quickly return to normal activities. My scar is 2inches and is healing really well. I am 11 week post op and doing really well. The only medication I take is 81Mg Aspirin and leave a normal life. I will be back with my cardiologist in 1 month and planning a ski vacation in Feb. Not all surgeons are qualified perform this type of operation and some are not candidates for a minimal invasive procedure so you are one of the fortunate ones. My surgeon who saved my life was Chief of Cardiac Thoractic Surgery Dr. Joseph Lamelas who has done over 14000 heart procedures at Mount Sinai Miami Beach. Wanda Mroz Barbara, I was a candidate for minimally invasive for my mitral valve repair through the right side but I chose the regular way. I listened to my sixth sense. The minimally also involves a groin incision for the heart lung machine and takes longer overall. So I went conventional. No regrets. Go with what your gut tells you. Best wishes...
