Thanks Brady. I reviewed their website. I have been seeing Dr. Stainback for 10 years now, yet have not had any issues except for changing out my pacemaker. So, I will see where this goes. Not sure I can afford second opinion due to insurance, cut will see.

Brady Busch Hi Horace,That looks like a great group of doctors, but sometimes it can be a hard decision. My cardiologist retired last summer and I haven't met a new one yet. By the way,I have a pacemaker also. Was yours completely updated or only the battery replaced and how long since the previous one?
Horace Elliott They replaced the entire unit, but not the lead. I have a one lead and I am dependent.

hi brady. new to this newsletter so am curious about other peoples' experiences. feb 2021 i had open heart surgery to replace mitral and aortic valves with porcine valve or bovine pericardium and a tricuspid repair with annuloplastic ring. not really sure what the porcine valve is...my docs aren't as forthcoming with as much info as i'd like and nobody mentioned calcification issues so i am looking for info on the longevity of my valves. they just tell me to eat well and exercise and i'm sure to limit stress levels as well, same as for a normal heart. Anyway, thanks for your info. maybe i can contact the manufacturer for more info. Mary Bigler, portland OR
Brady Busch Hi Mary, the two main sources for heart valve tissue are cow(bovine) and pig(porcine).I've read that horse is used sometimes. Happen to know which company made them? Yeah, calcification is what probably brings most people to valve replacement.Little tears in the tissue and then calcium begins to fill in the cracks.Unsure why the installed ones only last 10-20 years average.

Marie Myers I think it is because the valve tissue has no blood supply of it’s own. It is basically like tanned leather. So the wear and tear of thousands of heartbeats just cause it to degenerate. Generally the younger the patient, the faster the degeneration. But there is no formula to know how long any one valve will last; everyone is a bit different.
Brady Busch Probably correct Marie.I never thought of that.

Cathryn Howard Hi Brady, my mom is having mitral valve repair/replacement surgery in Seattle at Swedish with Dr. Eric Lehr on Dec 30. We are from Central WA so we will be traveling over Snoqualmie Pass in December, not the best time to do this, hoping for no snowstorm. Best wishes for a successful outcome and speedy recovery!
Brady Busch Hi Cathryn,Thanks,I hope your mom does well and happy traveling.
