Welcome to recovery .
People take anticoagulants to stop a clot forming on the valve . The valve keeps us alive .Open heart surgery is a big life event and a big life change . Just as we have adjusted and embraced the life we nearby didn ‘t have , so will you .
It takes time to adjust and to recover .

Christopher LeMay Thanks Ruth Joy, I probably caused some confusion how I posted. My original post was about having to need blood thinners for the mechanical valve, but I postponed that surgery and went with the Ross procedure.

Christopher LeMay Thank you. Sandy... yes I feel the first consult was a "this is what you do and that's it" approach rather than an education of options even if that facility didn't do the other options. Left me a little uneasy because I had read so much about other options that were dismissed.

Civita Fahey I got three opinions on my surgery also. Mine, like yours on the first one it was mechanical and thats it, total open heart etc. My second was better, he explained everything and told me I could make a choice. I felt very comfortable with the third opinion, who was able to get me to stop denying the fact that I needed OHS. He was straightforward but, also had compassion and understanding on what I was feeling. We decided on a tissue valve with minimally invansive surgery as I was 55 at the time and more than likely would be a TAVR replacement. I'm happy I chose him as all went well and I will be celebrating my 5 year anniversary at the end of this month. All is well and feeling great. Best of luck Christopher, its a tough decision, but you will know who the right surgeon is when you meet him.

Christopher LeMay Thank you, Civita! I'm sort of sandwiched between Boston and NYC, about two hours to each.

Civita Fahey well you cant go wrong then. they both have tremendous hospitals and so does CT.

Take a deep breath, lean on this community and fully weigh all your options. I hope you will be lead to what ultimately makes you feel comfortable with whatever decision you make.
