Hi Deb - Good to hear how Rick is doing. I was having the same problem. When my metoprol ran out after I got home there were no refills it is then I noticed my heart was racing and my pulse was in the mid 90's. I called my doctor and found out that you just can't go off that med you have to be weaned off so I was put back on at half dose of which I take my last one tomorrow. I have a feeling my rate will shoot back up there again. Right now it is around 70 but that is still high for me as compared to pre-surgery. I have a question for you. Did Rick have a mechanical or bovine/pig valve put in? Mine is a mechanical (St. Jude) and after I got out of ICU I told my Doctor that he gave me too much heart beat. I mean it pounds so hard I can hardly stand it. Also when I take a big deep breath in it feel like Tarzan is beating on my chest. I had my daughter put her hand on my chest yesterday and she couldn't believe what she felt. Now she understands what I am feeling. My doctor said my heart still needs more time to heal so I am trying to be patient. I was just wondering if anyone is experiencing what I am.

Suzanne Hunter I too have a mechanical st Jude's valve. I am 9 months post op. I have to take metoprolol for life as well as warfarin. It pounds away and yes it is loud but I have got used to it. If I get agitated then it realy pounds. I was in church and someone said that there was a very loud watch ticking sound. I was a little embarrassed because that was me ticking away. but such is life and you either deal with it or it could really become an issue. So love the sounds you make it will just let you know you are alive!!!
