Hi Evan. I faced the same dilemma and ultimately chose a bio prosthetic valve with the understanding that a transcatheter replacement would be possible years down the road. I did not want to be on warfarin for the rest of my life - the constant INR monitoring and dietary restrictions wouldn’t have worked for me. Also- I had severe aortic regurgitation with few, if any, symptoms. I did not want to wait for signs of heart failure to set in. I went ahead with the surgery so I could put this behind me.

Valerie Allen Evan, yes at this point they will do a first surgery and fit you with a biovalve that is large enough to perform a TAVR surgery for a second surgery if needed. Your surgeon should be able to provide this information as well as info on this site.

Marie Myers I think a lot depends on your age. I was 63 at the time of my surgery, and the valve choice was a difficult decision. I went with a tissue valve knowing that i will need a redo or a TAVR eventually. I didn’t want to be o Coumadin either. If you are much younger, a tissue valve may not last 15 years, so your age might play a factor in your decision. Have you looked into possible aortic valve repair? It should only done by experienced centers, but it is an option.

Daneen Douglas I contemplated the Edward’s Inspirus Resilia valve but since my aneurysm required my root to be replaced as well I went with the Freestyle root/valve bioprosthesis. It is shown to last 19-23 years so far. That’s the data they have to this point. Surgeon said it may last longer. We shall see. It’s supposed to be large enough for a TAVR in the future.
