thanks for much for your recent words they have been a comfort to me. By the way kind of confused you had AVR? Isn't this a mechanical valve? But you decided to go with bovine valve which is not a mechanical valve right? Whatever words you can share would be great. Thanks again!

Heather Kelly so AVR is aortic valve replacement. There are all different kinds of valves. There is a mechanical valve, which might be recommended because you’re so young, however, you have to do a medication maintenance for the rest of your life because of the valve. There is also bovine valves, which are made of cow tissue. There is also TAVR valves that are put in via transcatheter in the main artery of your leg. those however are said to only last 7 to 10 years so they don’t usually recommend them for young people. The bovine valve I chose is good for 15 to 20 years and can have TAVR valves inserted in them when it’s time. I elected to go with the bovine because medical science has advanced so much with cardiac care that I think there will be better options 10 years from now for aortic valve patients. do you research on all different types and be diligent about looking at the risk factors with all of them. Please ask if you have any other questions I’m happy to help.

I was so anxious and nervous beforehand and its been ups and downs like any other major surgery but you can get through this!!’ Every week got better and I am now walking at least 2 miles each day and feeling a lot more energy. Heather - I had an AVR on 10/6/21 after discovering my bicuspid valve and aortic regurgitation mostly by accident in May of 2021. I had planned for the mechanical valve since that is what the surgeon recommended. I just turned 50 and did not want to be on blood thinners. Even though lots of folks here go that route and do well - I wanted to avoid it if possible. At the last minute - like maybe an hour before surgery - the surgeon said given my concerns we could do a biologic valve and if / when the time comes it needs to be replaced - we can do it through a catheter vs. another big surgery. My relief was immense!
I also had a minimally invasive surgery so my surgery was on Wednesday morning and I went home on Friday evening. I was walking 2 miles/day in under 2 weeks and back to work in 3 weeks total.
Anyway -- thoughts and prayers are with you. Ask anything! This group is a blessing!
Heather, I will lift you up in prayer for a successful surgery and smooth recovery. God bless you

Heather Kelly Thank you Holly for your message. I am thrilled to hear of your choice and how last minute it was. My surgeon told me last week I could decide and tell him right before we go to surgery. I was kind of taken but apparently not uncommon. So great to hear you have done this and all is going well. I will have to have a mini sternum cut due to the depth and location of my valve but I am at peace with it and ready to get moving again! Take care of you!!!

Hi Heather!
I have a similar story to yours. I am 55 and had my aortic valve replaced, along with ascending aorta on November 9, 2021. I was also born with a bicuspid valve but didn’t find out until October 2, 2021, five weeks before surgery through an echocardiogram. The CT scan revealed an enlarged ascending aorta, it wasn’t critical but definitely enlarged (which happens with bicuspid valves). My surgeon waited until during surgery to decide to replace it or not. He did replace it because he didn’t want my aorta becoming larger and risk me having to have another surgery. I chose to get a biological valve. I didn’t want to be on blood thinners with the mechanical valve. I have had some issues with Afib after surgery so are on some blood thinners right now to prevent blood clots that can develop with Afib. I can answer any questions you have about post surgery, recovery, whatever you need. You will get through this! You sound like you have a terrific support system at home and that is very important to help with recovery after the hospital. You will get a little stronger each day and you are going to feel so much better when this is behind you! I love the reason you picked your date for surgery, makes it that more special!

Heather Kelly Thank you Dalanee for your encouraging words. I am pretty ready... as ready as we can be I am thinking. My surgeon did not see any enlargement with mine although my valve is deep and directly behind my sternum ... I do have a question for you: did you get the sutureless or sutured tissue valve? Just curious. You are the second person I have found close in age and it is wonderful to meet you. I will let you know how it all goes. God Bless
