Hi Jennifer. I have the same diagnosis as you and have sought three opinions. It has been very worthwhile for me as I believe now I have the right surgeon to do my operation. I saw one cardiologist and two Cardiothoracic surgeons. All said I would need to have something done, however, they differed on the timing and type of operation. Good luck with your heart journey.

Jennifer Donohue Hi Carmel. The cardiologist that works in the same practice as the surgeon agreed with the opinion of the first surgeon I saw. I guess I lumped the two of their opinions together as one since they are in the same practice. Separating them, I have received three opinions as well. Good questions though, how do you feel about opinions from related practitioners? I just read a post below about someone having a panel of doctors reviewing their case and the 6th doctor just going along because he was out voted anyway (I took some liberties in that sentence but that's why I feel having unrelated second and third opinions is important). Also, which level of doctor decides on when its time for surgery the cardiologist or the actual surgeons?

Carmel Power Hi Jennifer. I am still as unsure as you sound! Even though I think I have found the right surgeon. I am from Australia and we seem to have Cardiothoracic surgeons undertaking various procedures. I wanted to find someone who was primarily interested in mitral valve surgery! Now, I intend to get a cardiologist who works with him. I think the conventional way to treat this condition is to first go to a cardiologist who when you show some “decline”, will hold a conference with other cardiologists and surgeons and then as a group they make a decision. However, after talking to two heart surgeons, there is another viewpoint which seems to be early intervention. I have severe mitral valve regurgitation but am asymptomatic apart from getting tired. Need to find out some more information before I make a final decision. All the doctors were associate Professors or Professors.

Kathy Blank I am very happy I had my mitral valve repair before symptoms or heart damage occurred. After 3 surgical consults and 2 cardiologists - my robotic mitral valve took place within 6 mos of diagnosis of severe regurgitation. From what I learned there is really no benefit to waiting for the inevitable. Good luck to you all!

I just had non invasive heart valve surgery at UT Southwestern in Dallas Texas by a Dr. Neelan Doolabh who is one of the top valve surgeons in the country. I just called him. No referrals. Got an appointment with in a week of calling him and had surgery with in 2 weeks. I have a 3 inch incision under my right breast where he went in between my ribs. No broken bones. Please check him out, you won’t regret it. I’m post opp day 11, stopped taking pain medicine when I got home on day 5.
