John Dodson Hi Anna, I did some research and I'll copy the link below for a paper that surveyed almost 10,000 patients and gave a slight advantage to bovine. I'm not sure why a surgeon would recommend porcine, but they still do - maybe it is a size thing. My understanding is that a porcine valve is an actual pig valve, while a bovine valve is a constructed valve that uses bovine pericardial material to make the leaves, which are mounted to a delrin (plastic) base. You should also read the Wikipedia entry which goes into more detail on differences between pericardial and porcine valves, I'll post a link for that too.

The pericardial heart valve was invented by Marian Ionescu, a British surgeon working at the General Infirmary in Leeds, England.[1] He created this artificial bioprosthetic heart valve as a three-cusp structure made of chemically treated bovine pericardium attached to a Dacron cloth-covered titanium frame.[2]

Peggy Whitecotton My surgeon prefers bovine over porcine valves. He said he hasn't used porcine in about 7 years and feels bovine is more durable and last longer.

Gerald Poulton Some of it does depend on the position of the valve, for aortic valve replacement, bovine seems to be the present choice. When I found out I needed a valve replacement my cardiologist and surgeon basically told me at 65 years young that I needed a mechanical valve, my research and my internal medicine specialist changed my mind and I chose a bio prosthetic valve.
I leaned towards the pig valve but just because I used to raise pigs đŸ˜€ But my research convinced me that bovine was the best choice. Everyone should do their own research and make their own choice, because you, not your surgeon or anyone else, are the one that gets to live with your decision.

John, Just came across your Journal. Thank you for sharing. My surgery is coming up this Feb, and I am still looking at my valve options. I saw you were planning on getting the Edwards, tissue valve, model #11500A Inspiris Resilia. Is this the one you have ? Early data looks very good but seems they are releasing it in the U.S. in Jan 2018. Thanks Brian Z.

Congrats, John, on your great continuing progress. As for cardio rehab, my impression was that it's for people who'd been in poor condition pre-op (bad diet, lack of exercise). So now they were going to get in better shape. You sound like you don't need that "push" at all, so I'd ignore the rehab.
