Kelly Weisgarber Hi again Michele,
I thought 5.5 inches didn't seem very minimally invasive either! (it's actually just over 5) They never said why it was that size, I just figured they needed the room to do what the needed. I had one of Dr. Svensson's NP's say "oh your incision is small..." Maybe compared to a full?
I did have aortic aneurysm root repair also, Dr. Svensson wasn't sure if he would do that until he was in there, it was borderline.
No complications with bleeding, no transfusions. I was pretty anemic after surgery but that is normal after the trauma of surgery. My iron was back up at my 8 week post-op appointment.
Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Kelly Weisgarber Hi Michele,
surgery lasted about 4.5 hours. I can't find the name of the anesthesiologist in my paperwork or on my online chart. I am sure he introduced himself but it was right before surgery while waiting in the hallway. I can't remember! If I find it I'll pass that along to you.

Hi Kelly, I was just reading through your Journal and it sounds like we have very similar cases. I pretty much found out about my aortic valve condition by accident. I wasn't having any symptoms except a slight irritation in my chest. One test lead to another and finally found out I have a bicuspid aortic valve with severe regurgitation. I also have an aortic aneurysm and an issue with mitral valve.
I met with my surgeon yesterday and was basically told I'm in "too good of shape" to have surgery. They want to retest in 3 - 6 months. My mind was all set to go into surgery next week and not back to the waiting game.
I wish you the best of luck on your surgery when you have it. I was hoping to get a consultation with someone at Cleveland Clinic just to give me piece of mind that my surgeon was taking the right approach. Now that I have some time, I might get a chance to get that done.
Take care,
Steve

Hi Kelly, it is glad to know someone so close to me. My father-in -law lives in Boliver. I am just wondering if you saw any cardiologists closer to our area or just went to the Cleveland Clinic? I have been debating about going there. I know they are out of network for me so it will cost more for me but since they are so terrific and so relatively close I can't decide. Aultman hospital is a center for excellence in heart surgery so I think maybe I could just go there. Anyway, I am torn and since you are from this area just wondered what you had experienced.

Hi Kelly, thanks for your note on my recent post. Glad it was helpful to you.
I am hoping too that your aortic valve can be repaired. If anyone can do it, it is Dr. Svensson. Aren't you fortunate to llive within driving distance of the Cleveland Clinic. I agree, the thought of open heart surgery is overwhelming, but you are going to the best place with the best aortic valve specialist. God willing your age will be an asset in a faster recuperation.
Be sure to ask for a visit from Sandy an RN on Dr. Svensson ' s staff to come and give you some Reiki massages while you are there. She is fabulous.
