On, November 11th I had my bicuspid aortic valve repaired and an ascending aortic aneurysm repaired with a dacron graft. Recovery has been smooth and I have had no issues healing. I went today and had my first post-op echo. I was disappointed to learn that my valve is already leaking moderately again. My surgeon, Dr. William Ryan, had said after the surgery that his hopes were that the repair would last at least 10 years before I would need an actual valve replacement. My valve was leaking moderately before surgery...so really there has been no change except that I no longer have that horrible aneurysm. I was hoping for better news from this first echo, but overall I am trying to remain positive and appreciate any time that I have with my own valve before I need a replacement.... and hope science quickly advances so when the time comes I don't need another full sternotomy again!!!

Kelly Weisgarber Sorry about the news Kimberly. It is my fear also, with the repair, that before long I will be headed for surgery again. My post-op echo showed mild regurgitation which my Cardiologist said was normal with a repair. Like you said, at least the aneurysm is repaired too. I think it sounds like you have a wonderful attitude.

Emily Rowley It could be medication or fluid build up. Constipation doesn't help either. I know one woman in my Hospital Ward gained alot of weight after surgery due to her huge appetite and craving sweet foods like chocolate 🍫. I've had zero appetite in Hospital, I felt nauseous all the time. Feeling better at home though.

Today I hit 12 weeks post op! I am feeling great and have more and more energy as the weeks pass by. I would say I am about 95% back to normal and feeling GREAT! I no longer feel like I have been hit by a bus mid-afternoon and need a nap like I did before surgery. I can walk up stairs and inclines without being short of breath. And, I am SO HAPPY to know that the ticking time bomb... my ascending aortic aneurysm... is GONE!! A fading scar is the only reminder of this massive surgery I had 12 weeks ago and am so thankful to be on the other side of! I have my first echo in 3 weeks and am looking forward to that very much. To those of you waiting for your turn: you can do this! You will get through it and before you know it you will be counting out the weeks just as I have been. Weeks 1-3 are the roughest and after week 6 things get so much better. Having this behind you and a new lease on life is worth all of the pain and discomfort. I wish you all the best!! :)

I am 11 weeks post-op and feel great! Sternum pain is nearly gone even when I sneeze. I didn't think twice about going to the range today and shooting an AR 15 and pistol....but I am fairly sore this evening. I told a few people I went and everyone was shocked I did it this soon. Soooooo of course I googled it and all the advice was no shooting rifles until 6 months. Granted I wouldn't have even considered shooting a shotgun, but i am wondering if I messed up by shooting the AR. It has minimal recoil, but enough to feel. I will definitely call my doctor, but I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this. How long you waited? What your doctor advised, etc?

Cheryl Shute Walter I've had night sweats for over 10 years, so I didn't think anything of it when I had them post surgery until one morning I woke up until one morning last week. My hair was sopping wet, as were my pajamas. I had developed fever blisters on my lips. My temperature was regular. It seems I had some kind of virus or infection sweep through me. I was also having problems regulating my Coumadin. They had just upped my dosage to 5mg/night, and that sent me into an allergic reaction the next night, and the glands in my neck swelled up and my throat was closing. Almost ended up in the emergency room but thankfully Benedryl helped ease the symptoms until the dosage ran through me. Had an EKG the next day and also found out I've been in A-Fib. Now, for the last two days, I've felt better than ever!

8 weeks ago today I was opened up to have my bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aortic aneurysm repaired. I am feeling really good... I would say about 85% back to normal! The pain in my sternum drastically minimized around week 6. I still have lingering pain in my shoulder blade that is causing a lot of discomfort down my arm and in my elbow... I think it is a pinched nerve. I have been off all pain meds for weeks now and am down to 12.5mg metoprolol 2x/ day and 81mg aspirin. I am enjoying being able to walk far distances without becoming short of breath and exhausted! I am also a lot less tired throughout the day than I was pre-op - I always required a 2 hour nap, daily. My incision is still sensitive, but around week 7 I finally was able to start wearing clothing over it. It is truly amazing what all our bodies can endure and bounce back from. Recovery is definitely a marathon and not a sprint... it takes time and patience... but it is so worth it!!
Jacqueline Cook Congratulations Kimberly! Glad to hear you are doing so well.

Exactly one year ago today, I found out about my leaking bicuspid aortic valve and aneurysm. Today, I am three weeks post op. I saw my surgeon today and he did an x-ray which showed that my previously collapsed right lung is almost back to normal... it's not there yet, but we're definitely headed in the right direction. He reduced my Metoprolol down to 12.5mg since my blood pressure is running very low on it and I am dizzy a lot. He advised that I see my neurologist since I am still having 2-3 ocular migraines a day, but did reassure me that this is common and usually begins to lessen around 1 month post-op. I still have a few more weeks before I can drive and still need to be riding in the back seat with my kiddos when in the car (fine with me... I like being chauffeured around!) He said that my incision is healing very well and that once it is all said and done, it will just be a thin, white line. He said several times that I am doing very well and if all continues to go well, I do not need to see him again for a year!!! I am feeling a little stronger each day and can walk a little further. I am still having a lot of sternal discomfort, but am finally able to sleep on my side (thank God!) so I am sleeping much better. This has all been such a whirlwind and I am so thankful to have this behind me! Dr Ryan said that he expects my aortic valve repair to last around 10 years, but I will be checked annually to monitor the valve and my aortic root as well as arch (to ensure no more aneurysms decide to form). To those of you about to go in for surgery: I definitely agree with the majority of people who say waiting and anxiety is the hardest part. OHS is not fun, but it is definitely do-able. Make sure you choose a highly ranked hospital and surgeon and the rest will fall into place. A great deal of what I anticipated was not as bad as I had thought it might be... pain meds, walking and breathing will be your life for the first few weeks, but that is ok! Just remember... this is all temporary and part of what will help you feel much better in the long run!!!
Gregg Nissly Kimberly , glad to hear you are doing so well. Keep fighting.
Doran Herritt Amen. Good post. Glad to hear you r doing great. Take care, drn

Two weeks ago today, I had my ascending aortic aneurysm and bicuspid aortic valve repaired. In some ways, it's flown by and in others it has gone very slowly. I would have to say, despite multiple daily migraines and a lung that collapsed a few days ago, by far the hardest part of recovery since I got home has been sleeping!!! This is something I was not prepared for, but is a daily struggle. I am so tired but just can't sleep.... mostly because I just can't sleep on my back! I spend all night moving between the recliner and my bed with a wedge pillow. I am just about to the point where I am ready to resort to sleeping pills and that is something I have never used in my life!! Some advice for those of you still preparing for surgery:
- stock up on pillows! For me, the less expensive, flat pillows have been important in trying to get in a comfortable position. The more expensive, thick ones don't work well for wedging underneath you. When I am in bed, I currently have a wedge pillow + 6 additional pillows. When I am on the recliner, I have 4.
- have a variety of blankets. I have been very hot ever since surgery, so most nights I don't want heavy blankets despite it being near freezing here in Dallas at night.
- get a small fan. This was my BEST FRIEND in the hospital and I still can only sleep now with a fan blowing directly on me. I wake up in the night in sweats and hear this is very common post-op.
- practice wedging pillows underneath you with your caretaker ahead of time. If they know how to wedge the pillows under your back, etc. ahead of time, they will appreciate it a lot more when you are waking them up all through the night to re-position :)
- try to get accustomed to sleeping upright/ on your back in the weeks before surgery. This will help a ton after surgery when you have no other choice but to sleep in this position!

Enrique K Hi Kimberly, It will get much better we just need to be a little patient with ourselves as this takes time. You should return to normal sleeping patterns usually in 4-6 weeks once your incision heals internally. This is due primarily because of the effects of the anesthesia. Make sure you take enough rest breaks in between your normal daily activities and avoid napping during the day this helped me greatly. Take a relaxing shower and listen to relaxing music. Take your pain medication 1/2 hour before bedtime. My symptoms changed for the better after 2-3 weeks but I didn't have A sternotomy. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery. Hope you have a great thanksgiving with friends and family.

Paul Rose Hang in there Kimberley, it does get easier
The first thing to do is take as many pain meds as allowed, this will allow you to relax your muscles. If the pain is not dulled enough you just tense up more, which then hurts more and makes you over tired
Next get lots of deep breathing done, it may hurt to start, but it gets more comfortable. Add to this some walking. I used to count my steps and add 50-100 per day. It helps to have the longest walk latest at night . If your tired and have the meds then it's easier to sleep.
Finally I slept with several pillows supporting my back. I tried placing them in a vee shape but that only made my back ache as it.seemed to push my shoulders in - really uncomfortable, with the pillows stacked (see below) it allowed my shoulders and chest to open up more . So I set up pillows and layed them down against the wall or headboard
O

OOO
Then sleep/ rest with my back against them.
Over time I gradually reduced the number of pillows and did have times when I resembled a beached whale, or tortious with upturned she'll until my sternum healed enough that I could turn onto my side

Late this afternoon I started having severe pain in my right back and front side, in my rib cage area. I tried to see if it would pass but when it didn't I called the on call cardiologist who urged me to head to the ER. Being 10 days post op from OHS I didn't argue. After a whole battery of tests I am fortunate to know it's nothing super serious, but that I do have a collapsed lung. The doctor said it is very common after surgery when you aren't standing up straight or breathing deeply. I guess I need to get to work a little bit more than I have been with my spirometer! Ironically, today was the first day I made it all day with no pain meds and now here I am back again on narcotics. Recovery really is a slow, gradual and day by day thing!

Billy G Kimberly, I'm sorry to hear about the minor setback. Hopefully I'm not minimizing it too much, but I feel like after just getting through surgery, we can deal with these things that seem so much smaller.
I felt like we were both doing great, but I also got a call Friday from the PA at the surgeon's office, who just a few hours earlier had told me in person everything looked great, my chest x-rays were the best she's seen in a long time, and I was free to go home from LA to Vegas. The first thing she said was, "How far away are you?" That doesn't sound good. Apparently they just looked at the echo they did earlier in the day before releasing me from the LA area and saw fluid building up around my heart. I think it's a fairly common issue, just as your lung issue is, but it can be serious if not treated.
Of course, I was literally writing an update to friends and family to say we were an hour and a half outside LA and how great things were going when the PA called. We felt like everything was great, and it was, but as I always say, even if you feel great today, there could be a complication tomorrow. Never take a good day for granted.
To make matters worse, though, I called my girlfriend (who had to go home 2 days earlier for work) and let her know what was going on. I told her that I'd start a new med, which will hopefully take care of the problem, but if not, I joked that they'd simply open me back up to take out the liquid. That is a joke, as they would use a needle or catheter to do it, but as luck would have it, the call dropped immediately after I told her that! We hit a dead spot, and I couldn't talk to her again to tell her the actual treatment for 10 minutes. So the last thing she heard from me was that they may have to cut me open again. Crap! I felt awful about that.
How often are you using the spirometer?

Enrique K Hi Kimberly, post op at home I did experience headaches for 4 days. I ended up in the ER because I couldn't sleep and headache pain. I was told that any pre-conditions you have are amplified post op because your body is adjusting to the new blood circulation and still recuperating from the trauma from being on the OR table for hours. It will get better but it takes time. Everyone heals a little differently. Consult your cardiologist to see if your symptoms are normal for you. Hang in there, the healing process will take a bit longer than mine since I had minimal invasive surgery and I didn't have my sternum separated. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Things do get much better:-)

The only thing different after surgery was Warfarin was added. Anytime I bend my head down, sneeze, cough, or just move my head too fast I get a splitting headache. It will usually only last a few minutes at a time I guess it's like a tension headache, don't really know since i've never had headaches. :-)

I have had my chest tubes pulled as well as my pacing wires and everything but my central line. I am still in a great deal of pain and every so nurses and Doctor I have seen said this is typical for my age: those that are younger, have more nerves and muscle tone = more pain. I am retaining a small amount of fluid so I am on lasix trying to get that under control. Thanks to all of the narcotics, Igave not yet had a BM but am on plenty of meds right now to make that happen, too. I am up and walking 4 laps around the floor and got to take my first shower today since Tuesday. That was amazing!!!!! The spirometer is very hard because of all of my pain, but I am giving it my best. Over all, I would say I am extraditionarily pleased with having a repair vs a valve replacement as well and finally having that aneurysm out of me!!!! The pain however was something I really underestimated. It's no joke!!!! To those of you about to go in: this is totally do-able, but it is definitely a slow process and you must have patience with yourself. I am looking forward to regaining all of my strength and energy and being able to (finally) keep up with my sons!!!! 😃😃

Bethany spence I am 12 days post op. I was in a lot of pain while in the hospital. Nurses told me the same thing. Younger people have more pain. I have to say today I went to 2 stores with my mom and felt good, not great. Went home and took a nap. But what a difference a week has made. My right side of my chest must have more nerve damage. Lots of discomfort and numbness on that side. But I am down to half a pain pill every 5-6 hours. Just enough to take the edge off. Stay in there. You will feel better real soon. But don't over do it. I have been spoiled with my family and I am enjoying the rest. Keep us posted on your recovery. You seem to be doing great.

Meredith Bray I really started to feel better once the tubes and wires were out. here's some invaluable advice I received from my physical therapist:
1. Stand up as straight as you can when you are walking. Cast aside the instinct to curl inward to protect your chest. Use your core muscles to hold yourself upright.
2. When you are resting (sitting, reclining, sleeping) make sure your head, neck, and shoulders are supported. Your head is heavy, and the muscles that hold up your head reach down your back to approximately your bra-line. Use a travel pillow or rolled up t-shirt under your neck, even when sitting. Stuff a pillow or two under each arm to hold the weight off your shoulders.
I deliberately ate much fruit as soon as I could stand the taste of food. I went from Wednesday to Sunday without a BM - hospital wouldn't let me leave until I did.
I've heard the younger=more pain as well. I know the spirometer hurts, but power through it, just do it, it will speed your recovery!
Welcome to the rest of your life, here's to second birthdays!
-Meredith

Paul Rose Great news and well done! Be assertive with the meds, there is no reason that the medical staff can't manage your pain to a comfortable level regardless of age. The only time I was in real pain is when I weaned off too quickly, learned that lesson quickly and re-upped the meds. Bad news was it took a good day or two to get back on top of it. once I did I had little discomfort.
Keep up the good spirits and all the best with your recovery

My suitcase is packed, my house is almost cleaned, all of the laundry is done, all of the kids' things are in order for those who will be watching them and I (think) my mind is ready!! My husband and I will be spending the night tomorrow night near The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano so that we don't have to deal with Dallas rush hour traffic getting there Wednesday morning. I want to start the day of my surgery peacefully - not with road rage :) I took off the medical alert bracelet I've been wearing since my diagnosis and am more than happy to see my bare wrist again. That was such a good feeling taking that off! I had my cousin take some tasteful and modest pictures of my bare chest, so I can remember what it looked like before heart surgery. Just a personal thing I wanted to do. My husband and I plan to have a nice dinner together at Texas de Brazil tomorrow night, so hopefully I can stuff myself enough to not starve waiting for my 12:05 surgery time Wednesday :) Thank you all for the outpouring of love, support, encouragement, information and prayer you have shown me. I truly do not know what I would do without this site and everyone's guidance. You all have truly made this journey to surgery much easier for me. My heart sister, Emily Shively, who I met on this site, will be updating you all as she hears from my family on Wednesday. I was blessed to meet her earlier this year right after she had the same surgery I will be having, with the same surgeon at the same hospital. And we are the same age! My prayers go out to Jacqueline, Shelley, Billy and Kelly as you go in this week for your surgeries. May you all have textbook perfect surgeries and speedy recoveries. I look forward to "comparing notes" with y'all in the upcoming weeks!! <3

Billy G Kimberly, it sounds like you have everything well lined up. I'm finding myself in an odd, uncomfortable place where I am now rushing to get last minute things done (e.g., for work - the joys of being a small business owner). By the time you are going into surgery, I hope to be mostly done so I can relax a day or two before going in myself. I am glad it sounds like you are in that position of nearly having everything else in order so you can now focus on yourself, your surgery, and your recovery. That is awesome!
Good luck with surgery! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and will look forward to following your progress through everything! I also look forward to "comparing notes" in the upcoming weeks. I'm sure we will all have some challenges with some good and bad days ahead, but hopefully we can all be there for each other to make it easier to get through the days or moments that may prove to be more challenging. Keep the positive energy going; we're ready!

The dentist may put on a temp crown but may have to use more long lasting adhesive. You don't want this thing coming off during the time you're healing. The last resort of course is to extract the tooth.
You really don't want any more complications or risk factors during your critical healing period than the surgery itself. Ok?

Eddie Patton Honestly I was in and out those two days. Only real pain was from coughing due to a lung infection i picked up I did more than most. Due to anasthesia and pain medicine most of it was a blur. Even after coming off the good stuff the pain wasn't near as bad as I had imagined. Biggest problem was just getting comfortable.

Tammy Pilcher Kimberly, my surgery was my surgeon's first case on a Friday at 7:00 am. It took four hours and then I went to CICU. I was in and out the rest of that day and don't clearly remember much until late that night. I only threw-up once during that first night and I didn't feel nauseated, it just happened really fast. The next morning, Saturday, was my most difficult day. Not from pain, because I experienced very little pain, but from retaining 10 lbs. of fluid that caused breathing problems. I was given Lasix and by Sunday morning felt much better, because it got rid of all the fluid retention. I was moved out of CICU to a regular room in the cardiac wing of my hospital Sunday afternoon, where I stayed until my release on Tuesday morning. Everyone's experience is probably different in ways and similar in ways, but mine wasn't that bad. My chest was really numb for a long time, so that's probably why I didn't have much pain. The little pain I had was in my upper back and shoulders, but extra strength Tylenol managed it fine. If I hadn't retained fluid, which caused shortness of breath on Saturday, I would have been moved to my regular room Saturday morning. That day was my only rough day, thankfully. You can do this and it's worth it. Let me know if I can help. God bless!

Doran Herritt 12 days post op. Hears what I would say. I remember only slight instances from the day of surgery and day after. The second post op day is a bit more clear. I was achey more than in pain. The noise made me grumpy. I nodded off a lot. There are a lot of lines and wires to that feel unnatural but again. I wouldn't relate that to pain. Maybe flu like symptoms are the best way to describe it. What did hurt was when you cough. Hug your heart pillow and it will help. Hit your spirometer to keep your lungs clear. Finally I didn't have anyone in the day of surgery or the next two days and I'm happy I didn't. I wasn't up for talking.
Hope this helps drn

Enrique K Hi Kimberly, the first and second day I was in the ICU. I was not uncomfortable on the contrary I was so medicated that didn't feel any pain at all. I do remember he mouth tube I had in my mouth but they told me to push and it came out very easily. After ICU I was moved to my private room. The most uncomfortable part for me was the chest tubes. Do no let the pain get to you accept all the medicine and if they are not giving you anything ASK for it. The community is full of wealth of information and can share different experiences. You can go ahead and read my journal. Hope this helps.

Daniel Spurgeon I was groggy the first 8 hours post op, and thirsty more than anything. A single ice chip was more satisfying than a steak dinner, and I'm not exaggerating. UCLA's people made me comfortable. I woke up around 10:30 the first night after surgery feeling wide awake and then realized what time it was. UCLA gave me a mask and earplugs so I forced myself to go back to sleep and resume a Circadian rhythm, and I'm glad I did. Not much pain at all as long as I took my pain meds on schedule. My first night in step down room I tried to go without my regular dose and my sternum started to ache quite a bit. The nurse gave me the stubborn husband speech when she responded to my call light. Politely of course. You can look at my journal entries (or any other HVS members') I wrote at the time for more detail if you're inclined.
Nothing to fear, just be patient. No pun intended of course 🏥

Lisa Heinen I didn't experience pain so much - my chest felt somewhat numb. I did however struggle with a couple days of extreme nausea - I seemed to start feeling better by leaps and bounds once some of the anesthesia and surgery medicines were out of my system and I was able to eat again. It was very difficult to walk the first couple of days without feeling light headed and nauseous as I hadn't really eaten anything.

David Dobner The first 6-8 hours post op, I remember waking up and feeling so incredibly happy and no pain (asking if there was something on my neck- which of course yes- tubes, wires etc). it was an uncomfortable night as the anesthesia wore off. Day 2 my surgeon checked in and advised it was be the toughest day of recovery (and he was right). But they quickly get the pain under control (mine took a little longer to get the right painkillers- narcos and slow releasing morphine). I also barely remember the breathing tube, which was one of my main worries pre op.

Patrick Dowd I must say, I had some complications and had to stay on the respirator intubated for five days, so not moving much and being tied to the tubes was frustrating requiring great patience BUT I had no pain, or nausea but there were a few scary or uncomfortable or unpleasant moments and it was a challenge to be patient and go with the flow. This is not a little thing and major surgery does insult to the body, this is major, major surgery. It is hard on your body and requires you to draw deeply on your strength and the support or all around you. But we were all just like you, nervous, a little, or lot, afraid and so on. But we all survived and most are thriving. At the other end, Life is so much better afterwards itis worth ALL of the difficult moments. For in retrospect, that's all that they were difficult moments.....that passed. Give yourself a slow pace of expectation, pray for and draw on your patience, take all of the loving support people bring you come out on the other side and join us in encouraging those who follow you .

Rob Wigley For me, the discomfort from my shoulders (due to the position they put us in on the operating table) and leg (where they did the incision for the heart-lung bypass) hurt the most. I'm remembering now how BADLY I wanted water, but they would only give me ice chips, and they were damned stingy with them! It was for good reason, though, as I had nausea and had a bad reaction to the morphine (really sad, cause it felt so good.......) and I had to do oral painkillers, but hey, after 3 days I was virtually off pain meds and just took Naproxen. You'll be getting the best of care, so you'll be fine!

Well, I'm on the board. In exactly two weeks I will be having OHS to repair my aneurysm and repair/ replace my bicuspid aortic valve. I am, for the most part, feeling emotionally numb. I haven't cried much and am just in "preparation" mode...getting things in order, Christmas shopping, baking/ freezing meals for my family. This is a very surreal feeling knowing I am about to be going through so much physically and mentally. My husband works offshore in the oilfield and works 21 days on the rig/ 21 days home. He is now home for the next 10 weeks, so I am very thankful to have him here to help with my recovery and the kids. I had a CT of my coronaries yesterday and took a tour of the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. I also got two crowns that needed to be done before surgery. My pre-op is on the 6th. I still feel like I have a million things to do before surgery and feel like somehow I need to be more emotionally prepared before it gets here. I have been reading Adam's book and that with all of the support and advice, journals, posts from this site have helped immensely. Ready or not....here it comes VERY soon!

Kathleen F. My experience was the same as Betsy's; I knew I'd be on a "no-caffeine" heart floor at Mount Sinai so I weaned myself off caffeine a few weeks before surgery. I had no formal restrictions on either, but I tried to be as "clean" as possible going into surgery. A nurse told me no alcohol for a month after, but only when I asked, but my cardiologist and a few others disagreed with that, and said 1-2 servings of alcohol a day is fine, and 1 - 2 cups of coffee/ caffeine. It might depend on what meds someone is taking though. Alcohol does raise blood pressure, and caffeine increases your heart rate. It wasn't a problem for me, but I did make an effort to stay off both caffeine and alcohol for a while before and after surgery, just to be as "natural" and have the best recovery possible. Good luck!

They prefer you don't drink any alcohol but if you do, no more than 1 glass in 48 hours period and should be reported to the nurse practioner or pharmacist before drinking so they can adjust your doses. My medical team stressed consistency as super important in finding your uniue dose of blood thinner with no or min complications. For alcohol. I had my pre op a couple of weeks ago and in my info pack it specifically said no alcohol for seven days. I am also a social drinker so this weekend I went online to check if it was just over precaution. I came across some studies that alcohol use a few days before your surgery can lower your immune system and your risk of infection could go up after surgery. My guess is that like everything moderation is ok and A drink a day or two before wouldn't hurt you. Maybe they say seven because of the risk of one drink turning into four. Don't know. I decided not to chance it, but I am having little anxiety. Surgery on wed. I made it this far. I know I will have one after.
Best of luck to you. Thoughts and wishes heading your way. Drn

Paul Rose The one thing I wished... That someone had said take enough pain meds while in the hospital and at home to keep it well and truly under control. While in hospital I interpreted a nurses question for one or two painkillers to mean that I should really be weaning off, I went for one and paid the price. The goal is to keep a level of painkillers in your system sufficient to handle the pain, once it drops below a threshold the pain kicks in and not even liquid morphene helped. That was a hard lesson learned the hard way and one I hope no one else has to. It took a tough day or two to get the pain meds back up to the right level to suppress the pain. At the right levels of pain control it helps your body recover faster, you can move without tensing and no I did not get addicted but followed a gradual reduction plan.
Oh one other thing, if you use your finger and thumb to pinch each side of your sternum at the gap between the top two ribs when you cough it becomes much less painful.
Good luck with the surgery
Paul

Kimberly Biddick Thank you all so much for the great advice. That blog had some excellent information... definitely some things in there that I would not have thought of. Tina - part of me envies those of you had had a diagnosis and surgery very quickly - not too much time to think and worry about it! On the other hand, I am glad I am can be prepared. I am tentatively scheduled (waiting for official confirmation) for November 9 and the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano in Texas.

Ginger Marine I wish I had known the back/shoulder discomfort I had after the surgery was likely due to the surgery. I thought something was wrong with me, and did not complain. I wish I had--I might have had a way to deal with the discomfort for the first 3 weeks. Hurt much worse than my chest did, but I blamed it on having to be off my arthritis med.

David Dobner Two things for me- 1. get ahead of your pain management and let the nurses know when it isn't working as soon as possible. I had norco, but then also a slow releasing morphine the first 2 weeks. It took 2-3 days to get it under control. 2- I didn't expect the pain to come from different areas of my upper torso. Due to the rib cage being held open for over an hour (pressing against organs/ nerves etc). It is manageable with the pain meds, even though I couldn't sleep or rest on my back for the first 2 weeks due to a pain that manifested after 15 mins in my lower back (when in that positon).
Good luck with the surgery and I know you'll be back on your feet sooner than you'll think. Positive energy coming your way :)

I met with my second surgical consult in April and have seen him three times. In July he told me he was ready "to operate within a few weeks". A week later, he called and said that after consulting several others, I should be watched awhile longer. I had a follow up with my original surgeon of choice this week and now he said he would be willing to operate OR wait and re-check me every few months until I progress a little bit more. If it were just my valve I would put it off as long as possible, but since I have an aortic aneurysm, my first instinct is "GET IT OUT!!!!" I indicated I would rather proceed than wait and be exposed to CT radiation every 3 months. And now I await the return call from his office and what that might bring as to how this will progress. The emotional roller coaster is incredibly intense!!!

Robyn Tatu Ugh! Waiting for OHS turns reasonable, logical people into obsessive freaked-out people. It's so stressful! If you can manage that stress and you're having no symptoms perhaps waiting is the wise move. I applaud asking questions and I like that the Dr consulted with others and was willing to walk back his feelings of urgency. You know you have support here no matter your choice. Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as will make you feel like you have the answers you need.

Daniel Spurgeon I know multiple nurses, and they have all told me that they deliberately didn't tell me about the patients they see each month with dissecting aortas. It happens. I don't intend to be dramatic, but as a patient, if the only logic behind waiting is "the official answer is xyz" and no actual reasoning supports that answer, then I tend to doubt the establishment when I am the one with the risk. All of my pre surgical consults included me asking for the reasoning behind waiting when surgery was inevitable for my 4.7 root. Not a single surgeon said that there was any chance of the surgery being avoided, only delayed a year or two. If waiting meant I could have possibly **avoided** the surgery then I would have chose to wait. I guess my bottom line is that I didn't accept the status quo and asked lots of why questions, and I am glad I found candid surgeons who were honest with me. That led me to decide to go forward with my repair and I am glad I did. Whatever you decide I hope it after you have forced your surgeons to answer your questions instead of just "this is the answer."
During my waiting room phase I took studies like this one to my surgical consults and asked if they applied to my situation, and if the criteria in them was the criteria the surgeon was following, etc.

Elaine Cutri I'm sorry you're getting mixed answers and surgery has been postponed. It is very difficult playing the waiting game.
The surgery decision is based on the risk level. Is surgery more risky than waiting for the aneurysm to grow? If the morbidity or mortality rate is very low, say below 2-3%, surgery at a highly experienced heart facility with skilled surgeons is now less than the risk of an aorta dissection .
I was being followed by a surgeon in the Los Angeles area, near home. I was in a wait and see mode for about 1 1/2 years, aorta was changing slowly from 4.8 to 4.9 cm during that time. I was origianlly told the surgical threshold was about 5.5 cm (turns out for a small person with BAV, like you and I, it is 5.0 cm or less. The LA surgeon was nervous and gave me bad outcome odds that seemed high, 5-10%. I think he was guessing. Anyway, this was not the right place for me.
I got a 3rd consult with Dr Eric Roselli at the Cleveland Clinic. He was passionate and very skilled in the repair of aortas. He said threshold was 5.0 cm and by the time I saw him in January 2015 he said it was time to do surgery, not urgent, but soon. I had OHS surgery in May 2015. My aorta repair was more extensive than he originally thought it would be and the tissue more fragile. He did an excellent job with the repair of the aorta. I just want to say the thresholds are guidelines - risk percentages, not set in stone. The thresholds are also usually geared around people bigger than you and I (I'm 5'2" 130 lbs). I don't have kids, but I thought if I did, how would I manage this situation?
Before surgery I was told to not lift more than 10 lbs, keep my blood pressure low and stay away from stressful situations. It was very hard to manage this and keep my nerves calm. I'm glad it's over, I feel so much more at ease and have recovered from surgery. I have more info in "My Story". If I can help, let me know, evcutri @ gmail.com. Best wishes.

Daniel Spurgeon Adam Pick, it would be great if you could have a surgeon post a piece on this topic: "why does the medical community weigh the risk of dissection versus the risk of an aortic repair procedure in cases where the repair is inevitable at some point anyway?"
If someone sat me down with two burgers, one 800 calories and one 2000 calories, and said "you can eat either one first, but you must eat the 2000 calorie burger at some point" and my goal was to ingest as few calories as possible, I would eat the 2000 calorie burger and be done. But analogizing to medicine, the doctor would say "eat the 800 calorie burger because it is fewer calories than the 2000 calorie burger." Then when you inevitably eat the 2000 calorie burger you have ingested 800 unnecessary calories. No doctor would follow that scenario, so why did I and other patients hear this logic from at least some of the surgeons we spoke to during our pre op interviews?

Kimberly Biddick I completely agree Daniel.... In some instances, it makes sense...say, for example, you have an 89 year old in poor health with an aneurysm. However, for those of us that are young it really does not make much sense to wait. I am 33 years old, 5'4, 135 lbs and in otherwise good health, which puts me at a lower risk category, according to a surgeon I visited with. He told me I have 1-2 years before my aneurysm is at a size where I would have no choice but to operate, but is not there yet so I can continue to have it monitored. Because of my age, health, etc. my risk for dissection RIGHT NOW outweighs my risk of surgery. So now, where I currently sit, I am facing the incredible fear that everyday brings living with a virtual time bomb ticking away in my chest. Why, if an open heart surgery is inevitable in 1-2 years, would a surgeon not just suggest getting it over with so I can move on with my life??? This has been my argument since I found out about the aneurysm (along with a few symptoms and personal things). It just doesn't make much sense to me.

I met with my surgeon last week and he told me he is ready to schedule surgery. He said that he was going to consult with another prominent surgeon in the area he would like on my case since our goal is a valve-sparing David procedure. I am still waiting for the phone call to let me know whether the second surgeon is on board or would prefer more testing/ watching/ waiting. It has been an agonizing week to say the least, but I feel I am at peace with the decision to have surgery sooner rather than later. (Not sure how I will feel if the report back is otherwise). I have researched my condition so much and discussed it so much with other heart patients and close family members that I forget what a shock it is and how serious it really is. I was talking to a contractor at my house just today and he was talking about decisions and how sometimes they are so big. Without even thinking, I said "I know! Mechanical heart valve vs. tissue! Which one to get! Just like salt water vs. chlorine pool!" The look of complete shock washed over his face as he asked why I would compare a swimming pool to a heart valve. I laughed and said "Sorry, just two major decisions I am making right now in my life". He looked even more perplexed when he asked me why I was thinking about heart surgery. I explained the shortened version to him and realized as I discussed the BAV, the leaking valve, the aneurysm his face told the whole story. I didn't realize until today just how much my mind and body has had to adjust to this just being my new normal. I guess that is part of my mentally processing it and being able to cope with it. This aneurysm I have and am living with is scary as hell when you stop and think about it. It seems to me that being able to mentally process this and live with this is just another example of how miraculous the human mind is as well. I have seen so many wonderful stories on here of how OHS patients are walking 5+ miles mere weeks out of surgery and that is such a true testament to the amazing healing qualities the body has. In my opinion, the ability we all have to live with and come to terms with these very serious heart issues also shows how amazing our minds are as well.
And....just incase anyone is wondering, I came to two very important conclusions this evening: Salt water pool and tissue heart valve (should the David not be a possibility) :)
