Hi, i have had an aortic valve replacement surgery done on Nov.23/15. I have been home now for two and half weeks. The recovery is going well thank the Lord, the only issue that i am encountering is that i cannot sleep very well at night. Therefore i don't feel rested enough and basically it bothers me a lot. I have talked to the doctor of course, and i was given some help(sleeping pills) but there is a strong part of me that's telling me ""don't go that route"". Anybody can offer any suggestion? Thank you Pino Correale

Sophia Ridley Congratulation on your successful op and recovery.
I think this is very common, I feel the same (4wk post MV repair). I'm trying to sleep on a bed wedge with mountain of pillows and find I'm hot/cold and arms ache etc. Then I'm up every couple of hours as I'm drinking more water for BP. I eventually sleep for a few hours as I'm exhausted. My husband is suffering too as I'm forever rearranging things.
I fair better with a mug of hot milk and taking my pain meds just before bed. Take any other "evening" meds earlier. I've been worse since switching from Lovenox to Rivaroxaban so might be worth checking your meds. I don't want to take anything to 'help' as I'm rattling with drugs already!

W. Carter Take the meds and get the rest. A rested body recovers faster. Get naps whenever possible. I have kicked prescribed drugs a few times when I was on them long term due to the pain of surgeries. Its not hard, its pretty easy just like kicking cigarettes and booze which I have also kicked cold turkey. No probs just do it.

I am almost three months and also have trouble sleeping. I was taking Ativan pre and post surgery for anxiety which did help with sleeping, that is until I built up a tolerance for it and decided to wean off of it rather than increase the dose. I prefer no drugs so I am taking some natural supplements and trying meditation tapes. Trying not to stress has been the key for me, accepting that for NOW my body is still going through changes and this too shall pass. I wish you the very best in your recovery!!!!

Lilly Black I'm with everyone who posted....you gotta do what helps you rest! I never did take sleeping pills, but I did take anti-anxiety meds, (Ativan), and it helped me. Pino, I noticed you are Canadian. So am I...but I live in California and married to an American. I wish you a successful, full recovery!

pino correale Tanks Lilly, i am managing much better now. I am still taking my meds and yes they are helping. Ativan is actually a great drug for anxiety, i did have it once a few yrs. ago for a short time. I certainly don't intend to play doctor here, but from some (little) research that i have done and also talking to some of my own friends(doctors) believe it or not and i guess sometimes it's hard to admit, but i imagine you might know it already, ""ANXIETY"" is responsible for many corollary ills. I put up my hand and say that i fought it in the past with success, and i shall fight it in the future. Patience as always, along with whatever is going to work for you, prayer, yoga, meditation, hypnotherapy and so on and time the greatest healer of all. Good luck to everyone........Happy New Year
