Today is my 10th year anniversary - also known as my10th year valversary! On December 10, 2014 when I was 63yrs old, I received an aortic heart valve replacement. It was replaced with a 23mm Edwards Lifesciences Magna Ease bovine aortic heart valve. At 73 yrs old, I'm doing really well! I have had no issues whatsoever with my heart. I'm so grateful and so happy!
My current struggles are with Hashimoto's, but that's another story that has nothing to do with my heart. I'm working hard to go into remission!
Some exciting news - Stanford Health Care's Aortic Surveillance Coordinator contacted me at the beginning of October 2024. I was invited to their aortic surveillance program. The Coordinator's job is to help monitor and manage patients with aortic aneurysms or other aortic conditions that require ongoing surveillance. For this program, I have submitted the CT scan that was done prior to my heart valve replacement, and my most recent Echo results. The Cardiologists will be reviewing the results and in turn, I will receive an assessment at no cost. These Cardiologists are some of the best in the US. I'm excited to receive their assessment and hopefully I'll be able to ask them any questions.
A little history - I was a patient at Stanford Health Care in 2007, where my aortic aneurysm was fixed. This was called a valve-sparing aortic root replacement using a Dacron graft. I continued to be a patient for the next 7 years. They were wonderful! But in 2014, I decided to leave them because they recommended a mechanical heart valve.
My heart valve replacement was done at St. John's hospital in Santa Monica, CA on December 10, 2014 and my surgeon was Dr. Sharo Raissi, who is currently retired. I think about him a lot because I still cannot believe how well I am doing. He did an amazing job replacing my heart valve!
If I learn anything new from Stanford, I will share it with this community, as it can be helpful for all of us!
In the meantime, I wish everyone Happy Holidays! Good luck with your surgeries, and recoveries. Take care of yourselves....you are #1!
P.S. I have not used any baby aspirin for about 2 months now due to my gut issues! Planning to discuss with Stanford Health Care. Will keep everyone posted.
