Hey Ya'll, tomorrow it will be 6 months since getting my new "Pig" valve.
I feel very good, everything seems to be back to a pre surgery state. Since I was pretty much asymptomatic before surgery, this is a good thing. I'm able to jog and lift weights again, which is great. The only lingering issue I have from surgery is the bottom 2" of my scar is still not healing like the upper portion. I finally had my PC doc check it out, he said I need to see a dermatologist. I have that scheduled for 2 weeks from now. Hopefully they can get this resolved.
I am really Thankful for how this has played out. I pray that everyone on this site will have at least as good of an outcome as I have had. Hopefully this new valve (and I) are good for at least ten years now.... The Good LORD Willing.
Susan Lynn Happy Six-Month Anniversary, Rich! Wishing you continued good health!!

Question for the group. I'm now just about 5 months out from surgery. I feel pretty good. been jogging on a treadmill and lifting weights again at the gym. No real problems other than the bottom two inches of my scar are still really raw (red and tender) the upper portion is completely healed and even starting to fade. Has anyone else dealt with this ? Any suggestions

Barbara deLoache In my opinion, after 5 months that lower 2” of the incision line should be healed. The fact that it is still red and tender is not normal… as you know. You did not mention any drainage which is good. If it was me, I would show it to my primary care physician. It is possible that you have a little infection…or it’s possible that a suture under the skin may be causing the problem. If your cardiac surgeon has a PA or nurse practitioner they could look at it as well. ( I was an OR nurse for many years. ) I hope this helps.🌸

Yumiko Ishida The top portion of my incision site is still raw. I’m not even 5 weeks out, so our situation may be different, but my surgeon says it’s cellulitis and that the infection is slowing the healing. Other doctors at that office don’t think its an infection, but my surgeon has the most experience, so I am inclined to believe him. My white blood cell count is normal, so the infection is localized, but I am on antibiotics.

Yumiko Ishida I guess it depends on what you mean by “raw.” That sounds to me it’s not closed yet and there shouldn’t be any lotion or tape applied to it. Movement is ok, because you want blood flow to promote healing. I cover my raw area loosely with gauze to prevent further irritation.

Rich Butela It's definately closed up, nothing draining just very red and tender. The redness is not spreading so I don't think it's infected. Hi everybody. It's been about a month since my last post and I'm 4 months post op.
I'm feel pretty darn good. Still some soreness around the chest and solar plexus region, especially first thing in the morning. The bottom of my scar is still rather raw but other than that no real issues related to the surgery that I can tell. My cardiologist says I'm doing great. my numbers are steady, though I'm still not totally sure my meds are where I want them. I'm on Atenolol and Amlodipine, not sure I need to be on both of them. We'll see. Still enjoying my afternoon nap !
I joined a gym 2 weeks ago and have been doing a lot of treadmill since the weather here has been cold and wet. I've also started doing some weight stuff. So far so good, everything seems to be holding together.
Hope everyone else is having a good New Year

11 weeks. All is well.
Did a stress test last Friday. Everything went very well, my cardio capacity was rated as excellent. Good rhythm the whole time. Based on this my cardiologist says I do not need to do rehab. According to him I'm already past what they would have me do. I'm not sure how I feel about that.... Thinking I may join the local gym and do my own rehab for the winter months. Other than that, my scar is still tender and my chest and back muscles are still a little stiff and sore. My energy levels are pretty good, I'm able to do most everything around the house including projects, as long as I'm careful about how I lift and push.
George Gardopee Rich - it sounds like you are making excellent progress. Fantastic.
I liked your comment in an earlier post about your friend that asked if you would still eat pork products. When it was a possibility that I would get a pig valve, a friend of mine suggested that after the surgery I could embark on a new career hunting for truffles.

Pamela Gregory Great news Rich! I think the gym to walk longer comfortably inside during cold months is a really good idea. At rehab it was a gradual increase in speed and incline for 5-8 mins at a time with a short rest. don't push too hard on your own. For me, if it was too cold it made me feel terrible after the walks so I moved inside too. I walk for an hour everyday of my life including now. Feels great to be out daily again. Biggest news is my cough has gone away !!! WOO-HOO !
I'm very sore around my solar plexus area. I'm guessing that must be where alot of the muscles tie in and there seems to be some scar tissue that I'm pulling apart. My incision scar is also very tender this last couple weeks, no idea why. Could it be that the nerves are just now coming back to life ?
I'm doing a lot more stuff around the house. I put up some Christmas lights yesterday and carried in a 50 pound bag of dog food today. It tired me out pretty quickly but everything seems to be healing solidly. I may try a couple push ups this week.
Lifted a lot of Grandkids last week, lower back sore from that. Man I'm out of shape

Seven Weeks with my new Piggy valve.
Feeling pretty good this week.
My chest is still a little sore, especially around my solar plexus area. I think it's muscle pain from all the coughing I've been doing.
My BP & Heart rate are holding steady.
Still doing at least 2 miles everyday. This morning I took the dogs with me for the first time since surgery. Since one of them weighs as much as I do, I've been holding off walking him until my chest felt better.
We all had a good walk, but they were tired when we were done.
I also got to do a little fooling around in my forge this week. I Still can't swing a hammer yet but I did a little sanding and file work. It felt good.
The biggest thing to report this week is I FEEL NORMAL. I can't really explain it, but mentally I don't have the mental fog or light headedness I've had. It's subtle but real.
Next big thing is a stress test on Dec 8th then hopefully rehab.

SIX WEEKS !
Last week was rough. got a full blown cold (or flu or whatever it's called these days post covid.) Coughing , sneezing , runny nose, feeling run down. (even more run down than normal) . and on top of all that, I got stung by a wasp, on the eyelid, on Halloween. As you can see on the picture, I don't respond well to wasp stings . Hopefully this week will be less eventful. I'm still coughing a lot, which is keeping my chest sore. BP is holding steady around 120/ 78, Heart rate is still bouncing around with a resting rate in the 70s. Still walking 2 miles every day at a sub 18 minute mile pace without getting out of breath. I'm assuming that means my lungs are still clear.
Friday I go see my normal cardiologist, so we'll see what he thinks of all this. Hopefully he clears me for rehab.
The picture below is the day after the sting, so the swelling has gone down just a little from the night before. I think I looked better coming out of surgery.

Grace Mason Isn't it though!?!😊 Hope you are feeling better soon. My doc prescribed an OTC cough&cold med, Coricidin HBP, when I could hardly talk and coughing. It helped a lot. I've been completely off pain meds and woke with sharp pains the other morning on low left and in my left shoulder on each breathe in. After getting checked out, I apparently have pleurisy pain now, as lungs are recovering from the pleural effusion. This was actually a relief to know in a way, as opposed to additional effusion of the lung. So back on Tylenol now.

Feeling very good overall. My cough seems to be getting better. Appetite is back. I've been eating a lot of protein. (and sweets...) Walked 3 miles yesterday. The weather here in Atlanta is beautiful. Every day is a gift.
Chest is sore. I've been sleeping more on my side which probably isn't as good as on the back, but I sleep way better on my side, so it's a trade I'm willing to make.

Still have the cough, but got a chest x-ray and the lungs are clear. Primary Doc thinks it's a cold, but put me on Prednisone just in case.
I walked 2 miles in 39 minutes this morning. Could have done another but trying not to over do things.
Food is starting to taste better, so I'm eating more.
Slept in the bed last two nights. still waking up several times a night but I can usually fall right back to sleep.
Totally off any pain med. Chest is still tender, especially when I cough, but otherwise pretty good.
Only issues now are my BP is starting to climb. and my heart rate will drop below 40 sometimes when I'm just sitting around. Still feel fine even when it gets this low, and it picks right up if I get up and move around. Doc thinks it's due to the Beta blocker they have me on. They had stopped my normal BP meds when I went in to the hospital and gave me the beta blocker instead. I think it's not doing the job on my BP. Talked to PA this morning and will be restarting my Amlodipine tomorrow along with the Beta Blocker. We'll see what happens.
I'm keeping this journal because it helps me organize my thoughts and track my progress, and hopefully it may help someone else who is going through something similar. Rich Butela J - I found I didn't cough as much when I slept in the recliner. I could have probably just propped myself up in the bed and got the same result, but since I had the recliner and it was on the first floor, I decided to use it. Also it was a little easier to get in and out of the recliner the first couple days. Our bed is pretty high off the ground , so it was a challenge to climb in and out . If your going to buy a new recliner, get one of the automatic ones. You don't want to be fighting with one of the manual ones, Especially the ones with the lever on the side. It could put a lot of undue strain on your chest and shoulder muscles.

Grace Mason Excellent news on pain meds Rich. I'm right there with you on the cough. My throat has not recovered much. Make sure to eat plenty of protein to help your heart heal. I've been using quick packs of tuna(garlic and herb is pretty good, if you like tuna), cottage cheese and supplementing with protein drinks on some days too. I am still sleeping sitting slightly up, as well, and occasionally use a sleep aid my doc prescribed. My doc also recommended a humidifier.

Robert Miller Sorry about the cough. That's the most annoying thing that can happen after a OHS. I was wearing the "heart hugger" and it helped quite a bit, especially when you have to sneeze. Regarding food, there are many patients that report that food tasted different for some time after surgery. I didn't experience this but it seems pretty common. From what I read, taste should come back after a few months. About showers, that is the very first thing I did after coming home from the surgeries. Pipes and cables out and a shower. That was the best thing!!! Just make sure that for the first 1-2 weeks you don't rub on the incision. Let it dry out after the shower by wearing loose cloths. But I guess you are already beyond that point.
Jill Porter 2 weeks is still very early! Sounds like you’re doing great!

Day 5, finally got my shower ! Now I'm trying to come up with a routine for meds and exercising and such. This next 8 weeks is going to be Hard. I'm not one to sit around and take it easy. I know I'm going to want to do more than I'm supposed to. It's going to take some serious self control and a lot of oversight from my wife to keep me in check

Deena Z Naps are your best friend, Rich! Great feeling to be at home. I echo the need to pace yourself. I remember testing myself and going for a longer than usual walk several weeks post surgery and being exhausted. My heart rate escalated. I had to sit down on a stranger's lawn and call my husband to please pick me up. In the meantime, the owner of the home that I was "enjoying" came out to greet me, and starting talking about his father's OHS. Small world. He totally got why I needed a rest.

Rita SavelisIt is overwhelming. Especially on the days following surgery and when you come home from hospital. It's still so very very early and your body is recovering from trauma. It's hard to deal with the exhaustion and the discomfort. It takes time to recover and time to process emotionally. More time than one thinks. So know that you are in the norm Rich. One day at a time. Take care

Marie Myers I experienced that overwhelmed feeling when getting home. I was emotionally labile for a couple weeks, and I think it is our bodies response to a huge surgical event. Be patient and understanding with yourself, and things will get better bit by bit, and day by day.

STEPHEN MORRIS I remember coming home and feeling like I was a burden on my kids. I think though, they were just concerned about me and wanted to make sure I was ok. It took awhile for them to leave me over night alone. But as a single dad raising them. I have always enjoyed being with them. As well, being overwhelmed with rehab and not knowing what the future would be like.(I.e. would I be able to work)

Pre-Surgery testing today. All systems are go for Monday. Valve replacement for sure but based on the Echo they did today I don't know if the Doctor will do anything with the aortic artery. It seems like every time I get an Echo the results are different. This one shows my ascending aortic dilation is less than the last one, which was relatively small to begin with.

Stephen Walsh Did you do a TEE (docs sedate you and put a tube down your throat to look at valve and aorta from back of heart) or normal echo? TEE gives a much better image. I had one two weeks before my AVR surgery and docs will do TEE a few times when on the table (at least before and after valve replacement). The degree of dilation can change from time to time. If the diamater is 4 cm or more docs will consider fixing.
Grace Mason Great news Rich! Will be thinking of you and cheering you on Monday. All the best to you
Your race does sounds challenging and fun, except for the barbed wire part, hah!😆
