Wow, reading your notes and seeing your photo so soon after surgery gives me hope. I am scheduled for aortic valve and aorta replacement on the 25th and am trying to find out as much as I can about the recuperation process since I live alone and have 2 flights of stairs in my place. Continued good luck and I'll keep checking your notes for more updates.

Kimberly Biddick Glad I can help. I will continue to post updates. Best wishes to you!!

Hi Kimberly, Thank you for your note. I met with my surgeon last week and my surgery was actually put off at least for another three months. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. It does give me more time to do more research and maybe get another opinion. I think my biggest concern is with the aneurysm and waiting, but I guess the Dr's know best (I hope).
I would be interested in talking to you more about what you have learned in your research since it looks like we have the exact same condition.
I wish you the best of luck in your surgery and a speedy recovery. I know for me I am freaked out by this whole thing but it is sites like this and being able to talk to people going through the same thing that really help.
I will definitely follow you so I can see how things go for you. I know things are probably pretty crazy right now for you but if you want to chat, just let me know.
Thanks,
Steve

Kimberly Biddick HI Steve... that must be very hard to process being that close to surgery and then having it called off. I am not sure how I would handle that.
I definitely agree with what others have said... I think another opinion is in order. Do you have BAV? I consulted two surgeons here in Dallas and they both said the absolute cutoff for a male with BAV, regardless of valve function, symptoms, etc., is 5cm. My cut off is 4.5cm because I am a small female with BAV. I am currently at 4.2cm but am having surgery Wednesday to repair it because I have some concerning symptoms, have a few personal reasons, plus I don't agree with waiting an extra year or two (with a ticking time bomb in me) just for a surgery that is going to happen, without a doubt, any way. I have researched this extensively (for the past year - since my diagnosis) and I understand that there is a lot of inconsistency across among doctors and surgeons as to when to operate. Daniel Spurgeon (on this site) also did an extensive amount of research on the risk/rewards of repairing an AAA. I believe his was repaired around 4.7cm and he did not have BAV. He would be a great person to talk to as well. I have several links of studies I can send you if you would like me to. What is important to note is that symptoms have NOTHING to do with your AAA size. An AAA is a silent condition and whether or not your valve is causing you symptoms has absolutely nothing to do with how fragile your aortic tissue is at 5.1cm.
I definitely agree that this site and being able to connect with others with our same diagnosis helps immensely. This website has helped infinitely with my journey through this. There is some valuable information and insight from so many wonderful people that have been through the surgery journey already.
Thank you so much for your well wishes... I am definitely ready to have this behind me and begin the recovery phase! Feel free to email me if you'd like kimberlyabiddick @ gmail.com.

Kimberly: Iron Mountain is a little too far north for even me !! My cabin is near Alpena. I was born and raised in Traverse City. We "trolls" (from below the bridge) say that the U.P. has nine months of winter and three months of damn poor sledding. I'm going to see the surgeon in two weeks and will probably be looking at a May surgery date to dump this "well cooked" aortic heart valve. I'm unusually calm about all of this for some reason. I guess I'm just very confident that I'll be OK, so there is really nothing to be concerned about. It's NOT getting fixed that would make me nervous. I'll take this bump in the road all day as compared to the hand that some people in this world have been dealt. I hope you find the comfort level that you need to carry you through this,. You have a beautiful family. I raised twin girls (now 24) and a boy (now 26). I told them not to worry about this a bit. I got it.

Kimberly Biddick Yeah that sounds about right for the seasons up there in the UP! We went up there EVERY single year growing up... drove there from Dallas - 23 hours in the car, straight through without stopping! I remember the snow banks being taller than my Dad and him "tunneling" through them for us and making us forts. It was fun to play in one week out of the year, but that's about all I can handle! We got 6 inches down here last week and all of north Texas shut down ;) I am glad that you have found a peace about this and are calm. It really is so routine and there are so many positive outcomes that I think it really is just a little bump in the road. I have found a huge peace myself and I think as soon as everyone agrees about when to fix my aneurysm, I will feel much better about it all. I think the not knowing is the worst part! I look forward to hearing about how your surgeon's consult goes. One step closer to getting past this all!
I read your comment you left on my last journal... I have seen three cardiologists and all of them seem to have their own take on things. I chose the surgeon myself, based on reviews on here and a few people's impressions of him that have had surgery with him. My initial cardiologist is the one who performed the TEE and I promptly left him after that experience! That is not something I wish on ANYONE, ever!!!

Hi Kimberly...please let us know how about your consultation at the end of the month with Dr. Ryan. You will see him a few weeks before I will meet with him. From what I have read and heard about him, I have a good feeling that I am made a wise decision to have him do my surgery. Having said, "my surgery," I must tell you that it is still surreal to me....like I am still talking about someone else. I know exactly how you feel. I think I have "panic" under control, but it's inside, and I am feeing very nervous. I think I have read everything I could possibly find on Googel, and yes, it is scary, but I still read, even though my son tells me to stop. He tells me to enjoy every day, and when plans are in place, let it go. He does have a good point there. Let's try! Please call me "Edie." Sending hugs.

Surgeons who have extensive backgrounds in valvular surgery AND aortic aneurysms can only tech you more and give you a good plan of action.

Hey Kim! I'm your same age and unfortunately 32 is not too young for an aortic aneurysm. I live in Dallas too and would be glad to give you some doctor's names. I went through the same anxiety that you're now experiencing. What helped me the most was taking action. Instead of sitting around worrying about it, make a list of steps to take and start working towards checking things off. My surgery is set for January 22 at the Heart Hospital at Baylor Plano. At less than two weeks out, my anxiety has (almost) disappearred and peace has replaced it. You will get there too! Let me know if I can help.

Kimberly Biddick Hey!!! Thank you so much for reaching out to me! I am so glad to see some other people from Dallas on here. I read your story and it sounds like you are very fortunate that you had that CT done! Is the aneurysm what is driving your surgery or the valve? I would love the names of any doctors you would like to recommend. My email address is kimberlyabiddick@gmail.com. I guess the anxiety is absolutely normal for the type of procedures we all face. I am glad to hear that you have been able to find peace, especially heading in to surgery. I would love to keep in touch! I am sending many prayers and best wishes your way for a smooth surgery and recovery. Won't it be awesome once this is all in your past!!

Kimberly, Just a note about my selection of Cleveland Clinic. My local cardiologist in York pa. was watching my condition for several years and performed a catherization and recommended a visit with a local surgeon because in his words "not much is written about two valve surgery". You can imagine I was floored with this statement. This motivated me to research centers of excellence for a very experienced cardiologist with valve disorder knowledge. I found this at Cleveland and was put on a two yr watchful waiting with testing. It took a bit of time to select a surgeon that had experience with double valve surgery. The MV is what I am most concerned about "spelled worried " or skating on thin ice until surgery is completed. I have lived with this for many years but age doesn't have any advantage over the final shock when surgery is scheduled. In conclusion the centers of excellence are the best place to have surgery. I think you have a good start with you research. Good luck Bill
