A lot has to do with genetics and skin pigmentation so some people's scars fade while others remain quite visible and can even become keloid. For the first two months, nothing should be put on a sternum scar. After, you can massage it with a moisturiser in little circular motions to keep it soft. For the first summer or two, keep it out of the sun! Use strong sunscreen. That's about all you can do. If it becomes raised, see a dermatologist. Good luck!

Kim, I’m almost 6 months out. I was very athletic beforehand so I had to take 4 months of physical therapy and the therapist aggressively meassaged the scar twice a week. It was the most painful part of my PT. But in the end the scar blends in with my chest feel wise, and does not demonstrate any pain what’s so ever. I have a reddish line down my chest still but to be honest I like showing off that I have had open heart surgery. It makes a great conversation piece to remind others to think about their heart.
