Hello, Kim. Wishing you well with your upcoming surgery! Yesterday was the one-year mark for my mitral and tricuspid repairs and a Maze, via full sternotomy. I am 10 years older than you, and the entire experience was much easier than I had anticipated. I had almost no pain, my recovery was smooth and on target. The hardest part was the waiting. You'll have a nice nap while the experts take excellent care of you. Cheering for you from Texas!

Kim Chamberlain Thank you so much Ginny! It's amazing that your surgery and recovery went so well. I had all of my pre-ops done today, and it's getting pretty real. I have to admit that the thing that is scaring me the most about this whole thing is the intubation and having to wake up before they can remove the breathing tube. I am absolutely terrified! Not a lot of folks talk about that on here. I can only pray that I have a similar experience to yours. Thank you for the encouraging note. :-)

Susan Lynn Wishing you the best, Kim! I was worried about the tube and reminded the anesthesiologist that I had an easy gag reflex, and strongly suggested they remove the tube before I woke up.
Most folks on this site who have had the tube in when they awoke said that they were able to tolerate it without any trouble.
Everything will happen faster than you imagine. You'll also receive the medication you need to be comfortable throughout the process. Try to trust your team. They know what they're doing. Good luck!

Marie Myers I was worried about waking up on the tube also. (And I put them in for a living in the OR). When I woke up, I remember “chewing “ on the tube, but it did not bother me! Within a couple hazy minutes, it was gone. A lot of people have mentioned this through the 6 years I have been on this site. Most will tell you it was a pretty blurry memory because you are just waking up from a LOT of drugs and hours of surgery. I felt the whole surgical experience was not as bad as my worrying mind would have me believe.

Rose Madura Not everyone is the same of course, but they had a hard time making me up because I wasn't breathing on my own. So, I did finally wake up with it and I know I didn't like but my nurse calmed me down and explained everything. Shortly thereafter, the pulmonary guy came in and removed it. It's not as bad as your imagination lets you think.

Hi Kim,
I was diagnosed with severe MR, as well as A-fib about a year ago, after having had no prior heart issues. In the tests leading up to my surgery, a large cyst was found on the right side of my heart. Due to the numerous procedures to be done, the difficulty of a potential MV repair (my valve was very damaged in several areas), and the narrowness of my chest, my surgeon recommended we proceed via sternotomy. I was petrified of the sternotomy more than anything! My surgery was in November 2022. For me, the sternotomy allowed surgeons to make a successful repair, remove the cyst, perform a maze procedure, and apply a mitral valve clip over the course of a 7 hour surgery. I can honestly say I was shocked at the feeling of the sternotomy and the healing process. I can't even say it was "pain" at any time, but more a a slight discomfort, and only for a few days. I was on the pain meds for just 2 days, then dropped down to Tylenol. While the area remained tender for some time, it was not at all as "bad" as I imagined. What had been my biggest fear, turned out to be a bit of discomfort and a scar (looking better each day) that I've become proud of, as it signifies my strength and resilience. I wish you all the best in your surgery journey. Modern medicine truly is amazing. Soon you will be on the other side, a heart warrior on the recovery road and feeling great.
Klara Čičić Susan that is so nicely put, and your journey is amazing! Thank God :))) and modern medicine haha

Kim Chamberlain Susan, thank you so much for taking the time to send that note. That was so encouraging. While the surgeon thinks the likelihood of repair is very slight, he remains optimistic and says that he will be making that decision, repair vs. replace, in real time. And yes, my husband says that my scar will be a badge of honor. :-) I'm so very glad that your surgery was so successful and that you are recovering well. Again, thanks for the encouragement!
Ana Brusso Great positive post Susan. As Klara said Thank God and modern medicine.
