Hi Kim -
I was just reading your last journal entry and have a question for you. What made them decide to do the balloon rather than traditional open heart surgery? Are they leaving your aortic valve alone? Just curious as I have aortic valve stenosis and am researching all of my options.
Thank you!
Ashley

Kim Murray Sorry for not getting back sooner. Originally they wanted to replace both valves, my mitral Was severe and my aortic moderate. They wanted to replace my aortic valve because they said that if my chest was already opened up it made since to go ahead and replace the aortic valve, what they actually said was" well while we're in the ballpark" but now since I'm having the balloon we are just going to monitor my aortic valve. The surgeon I spoke to at clevland clinic said no need to replace yet if the balloon is successful on my mitral valve. I'm getting it done on June 30th😀

Hi Kim, I never did find out the cause of my skin issues. They put me on a steroid for a few days and it finally went away. I still have some scarring from it though. I saw both a dermatologist and rheumatologist and both had mentioned poor circulation from my heart plus the huge stress I was under as possible causes. It was all very strange because the biopsy showed it was consistent with an autoimmune disorder but they did a ton of autoimmune tests and they were all negative. I would try to see a dermatologist if you can. Have you had surgery yet or are you scheduled for it yet? I hope you find some answers!

Kim Murray My cardiologist here in Cincinnati said I would need a double valve replacement, do I went to Cleveland clinic to meet with a surgeon, but first They had me meet another cardiologist, at first this upset me, because I had researched the surgeon and that's who I drove all the way to Cleveland to meet not some random cardiologist. Needless to say this cardiologist feels as though I should first try a balloon valvoplasty first on my severe mitral valve stenosis and see if it works, my cardiologist here does not agree with that and thinks it's a waste of time. But me and my family feel like what do we have to lose"besides money" if it doesn't work for me, I can still always have OHS. But mean time my face is getting these wieird spots and is swelling under my eyes. My family has a history of autoimmune diseases as well, so I obviously googled my situation and lupus piped up, my primary care doc did a blood test and everything came back negative., I going to see a dermatologist on the 17th, I'm so nervous.

Kate Watson It's good that the autoimmune tests came out negative ! That was really scary for me, thinking I might have something else serious on top of my heart issue. Stay away from Googling your symptoms, it can make you crazy :-) Good luck at the deem appt.! I really hope they find the cause and that it's easily resolved.

Kim Murray Well I went to see the derm and he seems to think it's nothing that a later or acid peel may cure, but I don't agree. This spots just popped up while we were in gatlinburg tenn. I was feeling really bad , like I maybe over did it, when we got back to the cabin I had two whiteish raised patches on my cheeks, and they still haven't gone away. I sometimes feels like doctors do not really understand what I'm feeling.

Hi Kim, yes I had mitral stenosis. I also was told it was from r fever as a child. I am 52 and had not suffered any heart problems at all. When I first became unwell I too thought I was just getting very unfit, but the more I tried to fix that the worse I actually felt. I had a mechanical valve put in and it has saved my life. My surgeon could not repair my valve, even though I desperately wanted that. It has been 5 months since my operation and I am pretty normal, life is good. Happy to answer any curly questions..take care

Kim Murray Thank you so much for getting back to me, you are the first person to get back to me that also has mitral valve stenosis, I don't know if you read my story, but i just turned 45 and in pretty good shape, so while having my tonsils removed I went into congestive heart failure, which after a few test led to my diagnosis, I'm very scared about finding the right surgeon and still would like another opinion about getting a repair. Thanks for your time.

Hi Kim, welcome !! I'm in the UK. My consultant recommended, if I wished to learn in more detail about my surgery (mitral valve repair for prolapse), that I should look at the Mount Sinai NY site.
http://www.mitralvalverepair.org. I was just checking it out (now that I'm more fascinated than freaked out!) when I saw your post and read your story. It might give you some leads to discuss your case (repair / replace) and there are many on this site to advise you for surgery in US - this site is a great source of information and support.
