Question:“Why do they still need to open up the whole ribcage? Why can't they use keyhole surgery for this? (via Twitter)
Answer:
“And this is why the minimally invasive surgery which people keep talking about is not good for you, because to get the level of perfection that we're trying to get here, you simply can't do it through minimal-access surgery, and what happens to patients in 30 years' time after the repair is what matters, not how they are three weeks after the operation.
'Again, a very good example of how with minimal-access surgery, you simply couldn't do this operation satisfactorily. As you can see I'm not a fan of it, it's a bit like wallpapering the front hall through the letterbox. You know, we can do it, but would you like the results? And I think that very much of minimal-access surgery.'
Frank Wells, Cardiothoracic surgeon, Papworth Hospital (while operating)

By the way i had the TOE or TEE without any sedation it was slightly uncomfortable but manageable ,so it could be helpful for the surgeon and Cardiologist with all this precise information .from a TOE test .I was in a ward where people were in 75+age and did very well ,but all your concerns should be discussed with your surgeon you choose and you should get reassurance to get all sorted.
I went to Cardiologist as i thought i had indigestion and the Doctor wanted to rule out Heart problem it was diagnosed from Heart Murmur mitral valve prolapse from TOE ,i was expecting it too be indigestion ,i had a chronic cough laying down at night.
only symptom so quite Asymptomatic. But sooner than later to get on with the surgery i beleive from my research.
Good luck to you wishing you the success you deserve.

Susan Lynn The more you research, the more you will find surgeons who contradict each other on the merits of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. I had a mini-thoracitomy 7 months ago and I have a confirmed (by post op echocardiogram) excellent repair. Do your homework and select what's right for you. Good luck!

I believe my surgeon does both types, but I'm still to have an angiogram and I have no idea what state my arteries are in! My husband had an angiogram last October and he wasn't allowed home. He had a very successful CABG x3 a week later.
I had a new hip 5 months ago by the posterior approach which is the old school way of doing it. The surgeon has a better view than the newer anterior approach, but there are strict restrictions on movement after posterior. So it's short term pain for long term gain as well.
I am starting to get some breathlessness now so I've pretty much got my head round needing surgery.
Thank you for your comments.
