I was on Metroprolol after my aortic valve replacement. As an athlete, my heart rate was already low, and I think this drug lowered me down even more, to the point that one day, 2 weeks after surgery, I passed out. I also noticed that everytime I got off the couch, i was dizzy and had to put my head down. After a few weeks out of hospital, I weaned myself off and things got better. I think it also lowered down my diastolic blood pressure to 60, instead of the normal 80. After stopping the drug, my lower blood reading went up to 80 again.

Norine Dowd I had a hard time after my surgery getting used to Metroprolol also. Same thing really low heart rate and blood pressure. Did some dose adjustments and now I am tolerating it well. resting heart rate is consistently 60. I used to take my BP every day but a few months ago I decided that I was obsessing. So I just quit taking it.

Gerald Poulton Hi Michael, was also on it for a while and had the same symptoms. Because I had a blood pressure monitor I was able to link the episodes to the times my blood pressure was low. Nice to be off of it, I was in good shape prior to surgery with good blood pressure, it has returned to where it was before but my resting heart rate after 13 weeks us stii slightly elevated but then the heart is probably still healing as well

Michael Kohring Thanks so much. One of the nurses in the hospital tried to tell me that there are not side effects, kind of made me feel like I was the only one. Nice to know that I am not alone in this.

I’ll write again tomorrow. I had aortic valve replacement 3 weeks ago. I have my first cardiologist appointment tomorrow morning. Before OHS, I had been on statins for 4 years (10 mg Crestor). After surgery on Oct. 17, they put me on 2.5 mg Crestor and 25 mg metroprolol twice daily. I intend to ask tomorrow about the ace inhibitor + beta blocker and side effects of each and why I am taking both. I’ll send you any insights I gain.

Michael Kohring Leslie - I did have an afib episode on day 3 post, it was quickly corrected, but doctor said it was normal, about 40% of patients have an episode after heart valve surgery. I am off the metoprolol now and hope to never have to take it again.
