Hi Michele, I had my bicuspid aortic valve replaced 2.5 years ago at age 43. I'm really happy where i am right now - yes, it was rough, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Read through my journal, and please ask any questions you might have!

Its definitely a lot to deal with. I had my aortic valve replaced early last year. It was really difficult for me to deal with the concept of a valve replacement for the first few weeks, but as I gradually went downhill I came to realize that a valve replacement was my only hope and began looking forward to it. As Meredith said, the early stages of recovery are fairly rough, but for me recovery was steady and fairly quick. What helped me was the realization that the surgery was a portal to a much better life - and it has certainly turned out that way. I am very happy with the surgery, the surgeon (Dr McCarthy), and all who were involved with the surgery and am very happy with what it has done for me. Life is good again - I'm active and feel good. I definitely regard my valve as a gift.
Michele Ann Thank you Ron, it is nice to hear positive things.

Ron Broadhead You're most welcome Michele Ann. The surgery was very positive. I wish you the best for a good process leading up to the surgery and a successful surgery and uneventful recovery when the time comes.
