Hii Paul,
when you were first diagnosed in 2010; did you have an aneurysm?
and has your aortic regurgitation progressed to moderate or severe in the past 13 years?
the most sensitive test for aneurysm is cta. Echo is based on shadows. So i would trust ct images.
how old are you? Bc apparently that depends if you are a candidate for repair, vs bovine, vs mechanical.

Hi Paul, Read your story and your questions. I can tell you that it is not unusual to have varying opinions on ECHOS as to the degree of prolapse and regurgitation. I had this for years, despite going to the best cardiologists and getting two and then three opinions. Not sure if an aneurysm is easier/ more reliable to measure. It does sound like it should have been more evident. I also had one ECHO where the medical resident must have reviewed the ECHO and written the summary, because it contained an error that my cardiologist at the time did not catch, I questioned and the surgeon said was wrong.

Jennifer Fuller I also had echos that showed different measurements of my aorta. I was told that there’s a bit of ‘art’ in the science of reading echos and taking measurements. My surgeon ordered a CT with contrast a few weeks before my surgery. He considered that measurement the most reliable. I had the AVR surgery and the measurement taken then confirmed that result.

Kimberly Eisenhut Just asked my Dr to order a CT with contrast to be sure of my measurements of my aortic anuerysm and my tricuspid valve that has been at moderate to severe for years. I have been so much more fatigued and tired lately. We will see what she says. Going downtown to Northwestern Jan 30th to see her and hope to talk about a lot of my worries then. Hard when it is just my 18 year old and I. Don't like worrying him, so try very hard to play it down. :)

Richard Munson I cancelled mine this month over concern about the dye they inject. After my january echo i will decide about a plan. I will mention my concern regarding my aneurism size while at the echo appointment. Its been 4.1 for awhile on echo. It never stops.

Larry Peterson Hi Paul - I also had an echo showing my aneurysm at 5.4cm. and then a CT showing it at 4.7cm. My surgeon explained it as "the echo shows us flow and the CT shows us accurate measurements". But because my aortic stenosis was moderate to severe, my aneurysm greater than 4.5, and showing mild symptoms (short of breath, leg swelling) I qualified for surgery and had my aortic valve replaced with a bovine tissue valve and aneurysm repaired on Nov 30, 2023. My surgeon said "let's get this done before you are in full-blown heart failure", and I am grateful for that, as my recovery has gone very well so far due to a fairly healthy pre-surgery condition.

Hello. I have also had a bicupid valve and aortic aneurysm. In my case it resulted in 2 different emergency open heart surgeries. I feel blessed and amazed by what people can make it through. My advice would be to try to hang in there and just do your best with the things you can control and leave the rest to God. 🙂🙏

Marie Myers Paul, You are a lucky guy that your aneurysm did not enlarge from 5.7cm! Glad you are meeting with a surgeon and getting a plan in place. I also had a bicuspid valve that eventually became regurgitant. I also had a 4.8 cm ascending aneurysm and an aortic root aneurysm. My aneurysms were the driving force for having my surgery, but I did have an AVR at the same time. That was 6 years ago, soon to be 7 years in March. Hope everything goes as well for you as it did for me. I was 63 at the time of my surgery, and I did get back to work in 8 weeks part time. The whole experience wasn’t as “bad” as my worrying mind would have me believe. If you have any questions, this is a good place to be!

Paul Doria Hi Marie thanks for your comments. It’s my worrying mind that’s the worst point for me. It’s also the shock of finding out that my aorta has been that size for so long even though I was told otherwise. I just need to get my head round it and prepare properly again. Glad your surgery went so well
