Sorry to hear you are still suffering problems. I have suffered some nerve trauma post surgery. I was in ITCU for two weeks with no use of my left arm or right leg and unable to speak properly and reduced vision in my left eye. I was tested negative for stroke and nobody is able to tell me what happened other than bad luck! I am gradually regaining the use of my left arm and right leg but it is now five months from my operation and I still cannot fully raise my left arm and have reduced fine motor skills in my left hand. Hopefully, the next six months will see a full recovery but I would like to find out exactly what happened.

Paul Jenkins Anna thanks for the link to Roger's post. You hit the nail right on the head. I left a note in his thread asking how he's doing. I thought that I'd had a bad time but nothing compared with his experience. I hope that your own story has a happy ending. All the best - paul

we are praying for your complete recover, so sorry about your complications !! I am also from Iowa and am considering Dr. McCarthy to replace my aortic valve. I have heard he is one of the best in the country. We are concerned about the trip after surgery, was the plane ride home difficult ? Any advice you could give us regarding your experience at Northwestern and Dr. McCarthy would be appreciated. Good luck with the rest of your recovery !!

Paul Jenkins Brian, Dr McCarthy, his staff, and the NW hospital have excellent support for out of towners. They get patients from all over the world. There are many good hotels close to hospital where you and your nearest and dearest can stay pre and post surgery. We used the Hyatt Centric and my wife was able to wheelchair me from my hospital room right to our hotel room when I was discharged. Dr. M will assign a support person to help you with planning etc. No problems with the return flight we used a wheelchair in the airport and got good support from United Express. I'm 6' 7" so we flew first class but we'd have had the same support if we'd flown coach. Finally Dr. M. listens to your concerns and is prepared to answer all your questions. So my advice is be prepared and go for it.
Merry Christmas - Paul

Paul Jenkins PS -For what its worth we flew back less than two weeks post surgery. One doctor treating my plural effusion suggested that the depressurization during the return flight may have caused / contributed to my complications. He added that this was just speculation on his part and could have nothing to do with my problems. Many people on this forum flew post surgery without ill effects.

I'm recovering from aortic valve replacement on Sept. 26th so I'm 3 weeks out. Doing well and was told I was way ahead of schedule on doing the things I am able to do. Can even start driving next week which is a blessing. Sounds like you've had a lot to deal with but I just wanted to send my best wishes to you - and hope that you recover quickly.

Hello Paul
Thank you for the welcome here. I hope to be up on a treadmill and in as great shape as you when I can. Aortic stenosis got me like an Oklahoma tornado, and I am definitely not in the same place I was! Getting the diagnosis really sent me into a tail
spin at first, but after reading and watching videos about AVS I feel somewhat better.
Because I am considered a "young" patient (58 lol) my surgery will probably be open heart/metal valve/MAZE. I have A fib as well, since 2007. Looking forward to getting this resolved- still scared because like, this is my heart!! but the cardiologists here in Tulsa are super compassionate and supportive, and I think I will be OK. Happy I passed the Turing test!
All my best!

Im having the same surgery minus the Maze procedure next week,
