Good Afternoon Robert. Dr. Accola replaced my bicuspid aortic valve on October 11th, 2016. He is a wonderful caring person and his staff is topnotch. I went home four days after surgery. You are going to love the rooms for the heart surgery patients. It seems like such a small thing, but a wall of glass overlooking the lake, lifted my spirits. Good Luck, you are in good hands.

Robert - here we both are. Tomorrow at this time we will be both in the middle of our proceedures 1 mile apart from each other - you at Fla Hospital, and I at Orlando Regional Medical Center. My surgery is at 7am. As I am wheeled into the pre-op room I will be lifting you up in prayer that God is close to you, comfort you, and have his mighty hands at your side through the procedure. Hopefully I will post something in few days from my hospital bed. Hang in there brother - we will be doing this at the same time in the same city. Your surgeon, and mine are two of the best guys in town. This will be a good day for us tomorrow. Bob.

Robert Harris Thanks Kevin. I opted after much thought on the tissue valve. I believe the choice is ultimately up to you. You must be comfortable with your own decision. Best wishes.

KEVIN RYAN Robert, like others, I have gone around and around with the issue of valve type...paralysis by analysis :-). What initially was a "slam dunk" for mechanical has become one between tissue and the Ross procedure. Regarding tissue valve; not so concerned about re-op as much as mismatch/hemodynamic properties and subsequent effects on a strained LV. Glad you are doing well!

Thanks for your post. What made you decide in favor of tissue valve...I understand anticoag issue...but aren't you concerned with the re-operation issue? I am leaning toward On-X mechanical valve. My procedure is scheduled for Feb. Also, I understand Florida Hospital is Seventh Day Adventist. They (Adventists) have a pretty good understanding of lifestyle medicine and disease reversal. Do you find this also? Thanks,
Kevin.

Robert Harris After speaking with my surgeon, I choose the tissue valve. Mainly due to the coumadin factor, but also due to the advances in valve-in-valve procedures when it comes time for a replacement. The key seems to be keeping up with your follow-up appointments and replacing the valve on time. I think you are wise to choose the On-X valve if going mechanical. That would be my choice also. I hear very good things about Florida Hospital too.

Andrew Wagner I had the same concern. First I was pro mechanical, then decided on tissue after conversations with several surgeons. The key reason was to avoid the blood thinner and knowing that advances for a possible second valve replacement are on going at a rapid pace.
